Netball Match Reports: Three Wins!

HAWKS: Boronia Hawks 43 def Blackburn Red 39 (Emily Barrie 31, Mandy Bell 12)

It’s fair to say we went into tonight’s game a little weary and expecting the worst. Six of our usual players and fill ins were unavailable, leaving us short.
Lucky for us Sarah was able to fill in giving us a full team with no subs.

I’d say it was a fairly even and competitive game tonight against Blackburn.  We managed to get a pretty good lead by half time, our biggest margin being 10 goals.  Our third quarter was less dominant and Blackburn snuck up on us to bring the score back to even. At one stage they even managed to get a 2 goal lead.
Our defence end was on fire tonight. I can not praise Madison Barrie enough for her fantastic efforts, she was definitely a stand out performer for us.  Her hard work and pressure ultimately won us the game.  The combination of Madison and Sarah Alexander in defence was fantastic tonight, both girls put constant pressure on the Blackburn goalers and got countless turnovers. T onight was the first time these girls have played together, but they looked like seasoned experts in the ring.  Even the coach from the opposition had praise for our defence end! Well done girls.

Mandy and Emily were also a great combination for us in goals.  Emily Barrie is always a reliable and constantly good player but tonight she stepped it up even more.  Emily had no intentions of letting us lose, her aggressive and competitive side came out and she played some of her best netball for the season scoring 31 out of the 43 goals.  Mandy Bell (normally in the defence end) showed her versatility in GA.  Mandy is super athletic and is a player we can play anywhere and know she will always preform at her best.  Ellie Ingwersen’s passing into the ring was fantastic, as were her drives down the court.  Ellie manages to settle the play at times when we get a little rushed.  She’s very good at seeing a sneaky pass into a goalers in the ring.  Ally Victoria’s fitness never lets us down, running 3/4 of the game in centre and Carla Alexander was a great support for the defence end.

It’s hard to choose my best tonight as everyone really had to step up and play their best netball and everyone deserves a mention, however Madison totally killed it tonight, great game Mads!   We fought hard all the way to the end and took the win 43-39.  1 hour games with no fresh legs at Premier League level is hard work and it was a late game, not finishing until 10:30pm. It was a great game to watch, you girls had me on the edge of my seat. Happy to see you take the win, proving we are a top performing Premier League team.   Let’s beat Scoresby Swoopers next week to finish the season 3rd.

GOLD:  Boronia Gold 40 def Ringwood Black 22 (Jess Hall 23, Sarah Grigg 15, Casey Hahn 2).

This week we celebrated Casey Hahn’s 60th game with Boronia. Congratulations Casey on such an achievement.

We went into this weeks game thinking it would be a harder game than we’ve had and the first quarter definitely reflected that with us only up by 2 goals.
Second quarter showed a very different game with Janae, Inga and Ti dominating in defence with Ringwood only managing 2 goals.  We took the lead by 9.
In the last 1/2 Ringwood only scored 5 goals a quarter to our 10.  Great shooting again by Jess and Sarah.  Our whole team is playing so well together, bring on finals!

BROWN: Boronia Brown 31 def Belgrave South 11 (Dani Kemp 25, Sherridan Martin 6)

Going into the last round of the season before finals, sitting on top of the ladder and we took on the bottom of the ladder Belgrave South.  We had 6 of our original team with one fill in, so no bench or coach!

It wasn’t the most skilful of games but it certainly gave our legs a good run, with Dani’s shooting accuracy giving us a healthy 10-15 point lead and us maintaining that during the game, it left us room to move with a few sloppy plays and give the mid court a bit of a rest!  It was nice to play a clean, fair game, with Belgrave South not playing in normal positions, and giving us a chance play a few of our game plans.  With Alex’s go go gadget arms, Chelsea’s fierce attack on the ball and Loz and Jess’ running, it made it easy for us to get the ball down and feed some long lobs across to Dani.  A huge thank you to Jess for trekking to Dandenong on a Friday night to fill in – we will see you for 2019 registration!!  Now it’s on to our finals campaign, firstly taking on Upper Gully on Friday night who are currently sitting second.

Netball Match Reports for Round 13

Boronia HAWKS v Norwood Black

I’m going to be a harsh coach and say that this week we did not play our cleanest netball.  We were driving long and behind and had way too many unforced errors; we were working harder in attack to get the ball to goals than usual.

At half time I gave the girls a brutally honest ‘kick up the butt’ and told them to pick up their game; which they did.

Our defence end were our savours this week.  Kasey Lee came to our rescue to fill in last minute and had an absolutely fantastic game in WD. Nat Craven and Madison Barrie were a great combination in defence against very physical goalers. Kasey, Nat and Maddy all played ripper games this week, gaining many turn overs for Hawks.  A much better second half saw us take a convincing win 60-38, but maybe we should have won by more given Norwood are sitting bottom of the ladder.  2 games to go!

Boronia Hawks 60 d Norwood Black 38  Goals:  J.Rush 44, M. Hutton 10, S. Philp 6, E. Ingwersen, C. Alexander, E. Barrie, M. Barrie, A. Forrest, N. Craven.

Boronia GOLD v Scoresby Soarers

I thought last week was a good win but this week was even better.  Scoresby was strong in the first 1/4 and it was goal for goal.  We were in front by a couple of goals at the end of the quarter and I thought it was going to be a fight to stay in front.  We made a couple of changes and it just worked.  Defence was tight and made it hard work for their goalers as they often only had one goaler in the ring.  In the last half Sarah was on fire in goals, making great position and hardly missing a shot with 25 goals.

Everyone played an awesome game.  Well done again!

Boronia Gold 57 d Scoresby Soarers 29  Goals: S. Grigg 25, J. Hall 24, C. Hahn 6, C. Barnard 2,  D. Reynolds, I. Baselier, T. Parker, J. Griffin, S. Shillingford.

Boronia BROWN v FTG White

A feisty and tough game for the Boronia Brown girls this week. This season we have come up against some strong and more physical teams, but this week was unlike any other.  What we demonstrated was not only our strength on the court, but our mental strength and maturity. From the start of the game we fought hard to keep the scores as level as possible.

Courtney and Alex in defence held each other up during the game, literally speaking.  Not only are Alex’s arms long, but when her full body weight is being held up by Courtney to allow her reach even longer, this makes an unbeatable force!  A huge thank you to Naomi for filling in, her young legs were able to hold through the C for us whilst Lauren was away for the week.

Mollie, Sherridan and Amanda worked hard around the circles and bringing the ball down the court.  With control, strength and good choices of play they did not need to tire themselves out by trying to play rushed as the opposition.  Caitlin and Dani were very accurate and excelled under pressure, a confident goaler is key to success in the season and more importantly leading into finals.

In the last few minutes of the game we were down by 1 goal.  With 1 and a half minutes to go, we won a turnover which resulted in a goal to make us even.  Luckily after this goal it was then our centre pass to have us in the lead. In this time of nerves and pressure we were able to be calm, centred and take our time to ensure this centre pass resulted in us being in the lead. We scored the goal with no problems.  This left 30-40 seconds on the scoreboard with a Ferntree Gully centre.  A moment of calmness hit Mollie (WA) who turns to Caitlin (GA) and says ‘you know what, after this whole game I would actually be happy with draw’. But boy was she wrong.

Our hands on and screening pressure became too much for the GS on the opposition.  The win by 1 point as the GS missed the goal in the final remaining seconds and for Alex to have the rebound was so much sweeter than any draw could ever be.  Amazing game by the Boronia Brown team, a great reminder of sportsmanship, determination, and overall joy for the game. #getaroundthebrown

Boronia Brown 25 d Ferntree Gully White 24 Goals:  D. Kemp 16, C. Yann 9, A. Cellante, S. Martin, A. McKaige, M. McMahon, C. Krenn.

Netball Match Reports: Round 12 Friday 20 July

HAWKS

Good game tonight against Wantirna South Devils Reserve, we took the win 71-52.  It wasn’t our most consistent performance but we did have times of fantastic, positive play.  Once we settled into our own game we drove ahead to take a good lead.  Mandy Bell was good in defence, playing very tight in GK in the 2nd quarter but unfortunately had to come off with an ankle injury.  Ally Forrest jumped into GK and did a great job, taking heaps of interceptions; impressive effort for a mid court player, playing totally out of her usual position.  Talking defence, Amy Hazard totally smashed it in GD, this girl never stops working!

Carla Alexandra, who’s had a pretty terrible week and who played despite not feeling well, managed to play a full game in WD.  Great game Carla, you got your hand to lots of balls and great back up in defence.
Emily Barrie rescheduled her night to play (thanks Em) and had a ripper game in GA.  Emily and Julia have lots of playing experience together and you can see it on the court.  These two girls play very well together – 71 goals scored tonight!  Sharmini Philp had an excellent game in WA and the combination of Sharmini and Ellie Ingwersen in the mid court really improved our drives and feeding to the ring.

Only 3 more games till finals!!!   So far we’ve had some really great games and I’m looking forward to seeing you all bringing your best to finish the season and move into finals.

GOLD

Wow! What a win against Norwood.  We started strong and finished strong.  Once again our defenders (Janae and Inga) were tight, turning over many balls and rebounding missed shots.  Mid court (Ti, Stacey and Sarah) were always there to pass to and put pressure on when defending.  Our goalers (Jess, Casey and Chanelle) work so well together. Doesn’t matter what combination we have in goals.  A special mention to Chanelle this week, she played a different position every 1/4 and smashed it.  She is such an asset to our team!

BROWN

Another great game by all players this week.  We came out very strong and by half time the opposition only had only 5 goals.  We are now reaching the end of the season which means we are trialling finals combinations and working on refining our skills and teamwork.  Our improvement from the beginning of the season has been extremely obvious as we are showing on the court, scoreboard and ladder.  We have now moved up to 3rd position which is strong leading into finals.
This week we take on 4th who have been sitting in the top 2 all season until now.  It will be a tough game but a good eye opener to what we should expect in a few weeks in finals.

Netball Match Reports from 13 July

HAWKS – Premier Division
Boronia Hawks v Wantirna South Devils Round 11  A little bit of pre-game stress as my team dropped to 6 players 1 hour before the game… Lucky for us, Kasey Lee was able to chuck on her dress and runners, drive all the way from Frankston and play an absolute ripper of a game for us!  Thanks Kasey for coming to our rescue.

We knew tonight was going to be a tough game against 2nd seated Wantirna South Devils (we are currently sitting 4th).  As usual our first quarter was our biggest loss: 5-13 (maybe we need to start warming up better ladies!!!!); but as usual we picked up our game and showed them we weren’t losing without a fight.  In the 3rd quarter we got to within 3 goals but we just couldn’t keep up the fight and ended up losing 41-53.

Tonight’s score really doesn’t represent the quality of Netball we played.  It really was a great game of Netball with lots of positive play.  I’d say Wantirna beat us with their full court defence, defensive turnovers and their fitness tonight.  Amy Hazard was a stand out for us in GD; Amy – you played a very classy and skilful game against some questionable play.  You had countless turnovers, deflections and drive down the court.  Awesome game tonight, super happy to have you playing with us!  Mel Hutton proved her versatility and showed us she’s got the skills to step out of goals and run the Centre and, despite injury, Ally had a great 2nd half in WA.  Both our goalers; Emily Barrie and Sharmini-Jane Philp had to work very hard for each and every goal scored tonight! I t took a little while for our goalers to settle into their groove against some tough defenders, but once our mid-courters started feeding into the front positions both girls started to score well.  A pretty damn good effort against a very good team.  Well done Hawks!  Next week we play Wantirna South Reserves at Knox at 8pm.

GOLD – Division 3
Round 11 Boronia Gold v Upper Ferntree Gully The first half of our games are definitely or strongest. Our defence was tight with many turnovers by Inga and Ti, and plenty of options to pass down the court with mid court re-offering.  As always Jess giving the wings easy passing into the ring, Jess and Sarah not giving their defence the opportunity to rebound with their accuracy.  Our passes were settled and strong. Third quarter is where we seem to lose our drive.  We started to play Upper FTG’s game.  Forcing long passes which saw many turnovers by the opposition.  An awesome goal just inside the ring by Casey at the end of the quarter kept us in front by a goal.  We held onto our lead and won by 3.  We are on track for finals! Well done Gold!

BROWN – Division 4
Round 11 Boronia Brown 29 defeated Nunawading Lions 10 – Special mention to Alex on her 54th game for Boronia!  This is an enormous achievement which shows your growth in the club and your loyalty.

What a great game by every player on the court!  We all got to the game early and ready for a pre-game training session with Bec for defensive throw ins.  Just 5 minutes practicing these throw ins made such a difference on our flow down the court.  Huge congratulations to Chelsea, Alex, Amanda and Courtney for your willingness to learn and take the coaching on board.  The result was so rewarding.

This week’s game again was very physical.  And again we were the best and fairest team on court.  Unfortunately Amanda went down with an ankle injury in the 3rd quarter and we wish her a speedy recovery.  Our attacking end received some valuable feedback from Bec during the game.  Lauren leading the whole way down the court was a definite highlight of the game as well as the attacking end putting together some killer combinations.  Caitlin has settled well into GA with Dani in GS. The combination of accuracy, height and rebounds we cannot fault!  Sherridan, Mollie and Bec brought control and accuracy of assists into the goal circle as well as movement down the court.  Everyone supported each other which got us the lead and brought home the win!

We are creeping into finals and this win has now moved us up a spot to third on the ladder! As we are looking strong for finals we will be trialling combinations and using that warm up type to really define and broaden our skills. Great game girls! Looking forward to hopefully another win next week!

Netball Match Reports

BORONIA  HAWKS

Tonight was always going to be a tough game against top seated Fairpark Yellow, who came runners up to our Hawks premier team in the 2017 GF.  As usual Hawks started a little slow but settled into their groove 10 minutes into the game.  I think we surprised Fairpark by getting to within 3 goals and showing them some tough competition.  Fairpark were a team of 9 tonight and they are a very competitive and experienced team who have been playing together for years.  In the last quarter they blew out the scores to take the win by 20!  Hawks lost 40-60

Unfortunately with us only having 7 players and an hour long game, Hawks had no fresh legs to push through in the last quarter.  However I don’t think the scores reflected how good we played tonight.

Fill in Amy Hazard was a fantastic pick up for us in defence and played a great game with countless turn overs. Julia, Ann-Maree and Mel Hutton played hard and strong in goals together and Emily Barrie had a great game, working her arse off through the mid court.  Carla Alexander, Ally Victoria and Mandy Bell all had very good games but unfortunately we just couldn’t pull it together enough to keep the scores tighter.  I hope we get another chance to play Fairpark with our full team available, as I truly believe we could get close to them!!  Not a bad effort tonight  Go smash it next week against Mulgrave ladies!

Premier Division: Fairpark Yellow 60 d Boronia Hawks 40
Goals: Julia Rush 30, Mel Hutton 10, Carla Alexander, Emily Barrie, Mandy Bell, Ally Forrest, Kasey Fredericks.

BORONIA GOLD

This week we welcomed back Ti.  We came out strong leading the first 1/4 by a couple of goals and kept the lead into half time.  We had 9 players so with fresh legs in the third quarter we pushed the lead out to 6 goals. Defenders working hard with many rebounds and Stacey strong down the court in centre.  Goalers once again making great position in the ring.

With a change from us in the last quarter Whitehorse took the opportunity and managed to take the lead by 1 goal.  We weren’t going to let the win go without a fight and everyone stepped up to get back in front. We were able to hold on and take the win by one goal.

Div. 3: Boronia Gold 33 d Whitehorse Pioneers 31
Goals: Jess Hall, Sarah Grigg 13, Casey Hahn 4, Danielle Reynolds, Chanelle Barnard, Inge Baselier, Ti Parker, Janae Griffin, Stacey Shillingford.

BORONIA BROWN

After a rough start with 6 players, we ended the first quarter with 8!  Unfortunately we didn’t play the best game and were defeated.  Caitlin made her debut in GA which was great for height and rebounds, whilst our defence grows stronger with Alex and Courtney.  Great effort for the girls for sticking the game out and at the end of the day we still had a fun time!

Div. 4: Glen Waverley Hawks Blue 32 d Boronia Brown 19
Goals: Dani Kemp 15, Caitlin Yann 2, M.McMahon 2, Amanda Cellante, Alex McKaige, Lauren Bevan, Courtney Krenn, Chelsea Dynan.

Netball Match Reports

Boronia Hawks

Well that was a ripper of a game!  Hawks started off a little slow (as usual) losing the first quarter by 6.  Mandy Bell went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter and we had to switch things up.  We started to bring our game together in the second and took a lead in the third quarter.  Lilydale are a strong and competitive team and they had no intention of letting us win easily.  It went right to the end with us scoring the winning goal with 5 seconds to go!  Hawks won by 1 goal 36-35

New team member Mel Hutton settled into the team, well having a fantastic game in goals with Emily Barrie.  As usual our defence was strong against goalers who rarely missed.  Ally had a fantastic game in Centre and was a stand out performer tonight.  Absolutely fantastic game to watch, every girl deserves a mention as everyone really did have a fantastic game!

We will be put to the test next week against Lions, especially given we will be missing our 2 tall key defenders……..great game ladies a well fought win!

Boronia Brown

Boronia Brown 29 defeated North Ringwood 22

With a very quick opposing team we started a little rushed but then took them to our controlled game.  In the 3rd quarter we got a strong lead and dominated the court.  Dani played a ripper game in goals hardly missing at all, with Sherridan and Mollie assisting in GA.  A big thank you to Bec Allen for coming to coach and fill in for a few quarters.  Your guidance for all players, especially through the mid court is invaluable. It’s great to learn during the game as well as in the breaks!

Great game for all players, we held the lead in the last quarter well and didn’t let the pressure shake us.  This win seals our spot as 4th on the ladder with a one game lead on 5th.  Great game everyone! #getaroundthebrown

Netball Match Reports – 3 Wins!

HAWKS def Montrose Demons 66-31 (J. Rush 52, E. Barrie 14)

Hawks had a fantastic win over Montrose on Friday night, winning 66-31.  Even with two new players filling in for us this week, Hawks were strong right from the start.  It was lovely clean and controlled game of Netball played by Hawks.

Thank you to Carli Den Braber and Kasey Lee who both played great games for us this week in the mid court.  Julia and Emily Barrie dominated the goal end together and both Ally and Ellie had a fantastic game in the centre. Great game team!

GOLD def Kilsyth Cougars Black 34-21 (J. Hall 20, S. Grigg 9, C. Hahn 5)

Second win in a row!  In the first half of the game we managed to have a two goal lead with some tight defence by Inga and Janae.  With a change in goals at half time, Jess and Casey worked well together, offering many options to pass into the ring and they were on.  Inga was on fire, with many turnovers giving us the opportunity to push the lead out to 10.  Stacy was strong in centre, making position down the court.  Awesome work everyone!

After starting off a little rusty in this late 9.45pm game, the whole team pulled together in the 2nd quarter and dominated from then on.  We are learning how each other plays and what our strengths are as a united team.  With the continuous support from the sidelines from our bench, spectators and scorers this brings up our spirit all throughout each game.

The win has taken us up to 4th on the ladder which is fantastic as we came into the section late!  This week we welcomed Caitlin Yann to our team. Caitlin will be a great addition throughout the mid court and defence!
