The Home & Away season has come to an end with Junior Finals starting this weekend.  We have U12Girls, U12, U13, U16Girls and U17’s heading into Round 1 of Finals.  The girls have a bye this week, but the boys are in full swing.  It is wonderful and exciting for these teams to have this opportunity.  Please get down and support them if you can.  All finals details are available on the EFL website.

As always it’s still a busy time of the season.  We see Boronia Auskick have it’s last session this coming Friday night.  This will be a fun night of games and presentations to all the children.  It’s also an opportunity for Auskickers moving up to next Under 8’s to get registered and ready for footy next season.

We have our Under 17 Presentation Evening on Saturday 31 August at the Knox Club.  This is quite a formal evening where the Under 17’s dress up in their finest as we announce the winner of the 2019 Ray Lacey Medal for Best & Fairest.   It is done this way, as the majority of these players have played their last year of Junior football, so it’s nice to make it special for them.   Our Junior Presentation Day for all other Junior Teams will be held on Sunday 8 September.  Details will be distributed shortly.

Miller Park is looking a treat and we look forward to heading back there for our 2020 Junior Season.  The surface will be an outstanding improvement of what is has been in the past and even Chandler Park became quite boggy by the end of the season.

The Junior Committee has been working hard on strategies to continue to increase numbers for the coming 2020 season.  They have also been busy working on building our Boronia Auskick program going forward.  Being part of our great Junior Committee is an extremely rewarding process.  Knowing that you can have a small impact on improving the club that your children play for is very satisfying.  I would encourage any parent who would like to get involved to please email us on boroniajnr@elf.org.au.

We are also seeking Junior Coaches for 2020.  All positions are open.  If you would like to have an opportunity to coach one of our Junior Teams, please ensure that you put your application in.  ALL 2019 coaches and potential coaches for 2020 need to apply for positions, it’s not just a given that this year’s coach will continue into next year.  No experience necessary as we will provide you with support and training course necessary to do a great job.

We are loving our new Training/Warm up tops!  Another order will be placed prior to the end of August and order forms will be sent out in the next week.  Orders will close quickly so ensure you put your order in as soon as the forms are release.  We also have great new Sports Bags available across the club.  These can be purchased the Club at on Thursday nights.

Senior President’s Update

IMG_8811

To say our season for the senior men has been a roller coaster would be an understatement.  Thankfully, nearly all our injured players are back on the field and, with three games to go, we should have close to a full list vying for a senior game come finals!

It would be great if as many supporters as possible get down to ‘The Hawka’ over the next two weeks to give our teams an extra boost leading into their finals campaigns.

Our senior women’s team kick off at 8:20am this Saturday for their final home and away match of the season, before they commence their first finals campaign at Mulgrave on 18 August.  Special thanks must go out to Lace and Snicko (Ray Lacey and Scott Nicholas) for doing a tremendous job coaching our growing list of female players. We began with 9 women last year, but they have built that up to well over 30 this year.  With two junior girls teams, who knows where we will be in season 2020!

20190629-186A4374

After the senior game last Saturday, the Mulgrave rooms were just full of Boronia people. Probably 80% Boronia in their homerooms!! The senior umpire said to me; ‘The culture you have at Boronia is just amazing.  You have Panda, the Krenn’s at every game and people like Bomma running Coterie – it’s incredible!’  And he is right!

Our 19’s have been incredible with up to 5 eligible players playing senior football in recent weeks!  Our Development team is on top and our senior team is half a percentage point off top spot too! Without getting ahead of ourselves, the Club is well placed to have a fair dinkum crack come finals time!

20190721_328

Unfortunately, our two netball teams, Hawks and Brown will be hard pressed to play finals this season with only 2 games to go.  The Hawks in Premier Division have won 4 games from 11, with 4 thrillers decided by 4 points or less.  The “Brownies” have suffered from injuries all season and have only managed 2 wins so far.  On a brighter note, over 30 players have played netball with the Club this season, including a number of “cross overs” from our women’s footy team who are happy to double up for the weekend!

IMG_0293

The Vets finished their season under lights in the wilds of South Belgrave last Friday.  The boys kicked on to celebrate the end of their season in fine style, because they played some great footy during the year and welcomed many new players to the Club.  Thanks to Joey, Jason and the boys for another great season.  Success will come!

20190526-186A2604.jpg

Off the field, our new lights get installed at Tormore Reserve this week.  This is a most exciting development and will give our Club incredible flexibility when fixturing matches in future years.  Special thanks to Woody (Kristan Wood) for facilitating this project.  In addition, much work has been done behind the scenes to secure funding for a facility upgrade in the next 2 to 3 years.   We hope to have some meaningful announcements in the coming months!

Please get behind Murra (David Murrihy) and support our finals hosting program.  This is equivalent to a major club sponsorship and we need as many volunteers as possible to make this work!

20170916-186A0477

We have the Presidents Lunch with Matthew Richardson, which is completely sold out, on August 17 and the vote count night after our last match of the season!  The senior Awards Night is on 4 October and DOES NOT clash with the Vet’s Footy Trip!

The next 7 weeks could be ‘crazy’ busy but get involved and cheer loudly!!

Go Hawka!

Greg Hannon

Senior President, Boronia Hawks Football Netball Club

2019 Senior Football Finals Schedule

Start sorting out your diary for August and September as we head towards EFL and ERWFL Finals!

In a nutshell, we have four weeks of Division 1 finals at Tormore Reserve; the senior men are aiming to compete in Division 2 finals at East Burwood; the senior women at Mulgrave; and the Veterans at Lilydale.

The Club has a proud record of hosting finals over many years.  This is made possible by two things: the superb facilities and playing surface of Tormore Reserve; and the fantastic support of our volunteers who run the match days so seamlessly.  We are now asking for volunteers to step forward and offer their help for this year’s final series.

If you can help out in any way during the finals at Tormore please contact Greg Hannon on 0438 616 139, David Murrihy on 0418 542 337, Ellen Johnson for BBQ & Canteen on 0407 672 816 or Ellisa Schmidtke on 0417 593 884.

Things we need to to cover include:

  • traffic control and car parking;
  • car boot alcohol inspections at the gate;
  • canteen and kitchen assistants;
  • bar staff at two outside bar tents – must have RSA accreditation;
  • BBQ cooks and helpers for two / three BBQ tents;
  • delivering supplies to bars and BBQ’s.

** EFL passes for volunteers to gain no-cost admission to the ground will be available for collection from the Clubrooms after 7:00pm on Thursday nights during the finals.

Responsible Serving of Alcohol Course

The Club will be hosting a RSA accreditation course on Monday the 5th of August at 6:30pm.

This session is intended to certify a team of our senior players and club members who can then assist with the serving of alcohol during the senior finals series at Tormore Reserve from 25 August to 14 September.

We have a limit of 30 participants for the course, which will be fully funded by the Club, with no cost to participants.  It will be run by Peter Rosenthal from Good Sports. At the end of the session, participants will be fully certified to serve alcohol at Club events, including finals, as well as at other venues.

To express your interest in the course please email Dave at boroniahawksfc@gmail.com or send me a message via Facebook. Places can not be guaranteed for everyone, so please sign up early!

Work Commences on New Lights

Work has now started on the new lights at Tormore Reserve.

We will have four new 28m poles, each one carrying 6 lights. For the sparkies, they are 6 Philips Optivision BVP525 LED Luminaires.  They will be a significant improvement for training sessions and will enable us to conduct twilight and night matches.

Many thanks to Alan Tudge MP for his support in funding this tremendous addition to the facilities at Tormore Reserve.

Thanks to Knox City Council for their support with design and construction.

Finally, thanks our Grants Co-ordinator Kerryn Westcott for successfully managing the submission process resulting in our winning the grant; and to our Project Manager, that amazing man of many talents, Kristan Wood!

The Access All Abilities (AAA) NAB AFL Auskick program is designed to ensure that Auskick Centres are as inclusive as possible and that children of All Abilities have access to participate in the great game of AFL football.

The implementation of our Sensory Space at Boronia Auskick has been a significant reason for this recognition.

Sam Dunkinson, our Auskick Co-ordinator, uses the space to assist the kids who might get a little overwhelmed by everything and just need a quiet spot for a while.  The Club has been supported in this initiative through the generosity of our great supporter Sam Dib and Lipari Pizza Pasta.

Boronia Hawks are very pleased let all our supporters know that Samantha Dunkinson has been nominated for the AFL’s AUSKICK VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD. #auskickvoty #boroniahawks

65394918_10156508512847634_1276263091218153472_n

Sam is our Junior Vice-President and took on the role of Boronia Auskick Co-ordinator at the start of this year.   Boronia Auskick has gone from strength to strength under her guidance, with 105 registered players getting out for a kick on Friday nights at Tormore Reserve.

31081513_1675723415840457_6773574041845366784_o

Sam has got it all running smoothly, reflecting her training as a teacher.  Parents are getting involved in running the groups and we have senior players from both our men’s and women’s teams actively involved in helping the kids to develop their skills.

62428844_10156508697687634_6189752411381301248_n

Sam has brought an enormous passion and commitment to Boronia Auskick, resulting in some great initiatives.  She has brought sponsors Boronia McDonalds and Lipari Pizza on board to assist with funding of new equipment including footballs and water bottles.  Sam has also introduced a Sensory Space to assist the kids who might get a little overwhelmed by everything and just need a quiet spot for a while.

65004718_10156489709827634_7657232553333489664_n

Sam’s contribution to the Boronia Auskick has seen a real boost to our junior numbers with many Auskickers also choosing to play junior footy with Boronia Hawks.  Our two new Under 8’s teams are a direct result of the boost to our Auskick program over the past two years.

61423840_10156424483177634_7925324463489417216_n

Well done Sam!  We congratulate you on your well deserved nomination and wish you well when the awards are announced.  You are already a winner in our eyes!
