Club Statement on the 2020 Season

As a club, and Boronia community, we’re all feeling disappointed with the decision to cancel the 2020 season for senior men and women.

The club plays such a huge part of the lives and wellbeing of so many people, and to know that we will need to go without it for the foreseeable future, in a time when perhaps we need it most, is hard to swallow. With so many sad and tragic events in Australia and around the world, we must keep our footy in perspective but we all could do with the support of our footy family that comes from sharing a laugh at training and on game day.

In saying this, we appreciate and acknowledge the leadership of the EFNL in navigating through an unprecedented situation. We recognise that this has been a difficult decision with a number of factors in play, and ultimately the decision has been based on the health and safety of all of our members, and the future viability of club’s within the league. In a tough time, we can’t do anything but respect this decision and appreciate the work that’s occurred and will continue to occur, behind the scenes for the betterment of football and netball in the east.

As a Club we are in strong position, and we have an amazing group of volunteers and supporters. We’ve created some serious momentum and our Board and Committees will keep pushing to ensure we are in an even stronger position when senior football and netball returns in 2021.

Thank you to all of our club members for their positivity and resilience over the past few months. I couldn’t be more proud of the club and know we will face the next period in the same way.

While we’re thrilled our junior footballers will be able to participate in a modified season, and look forward to supporting our little Hawka’s in 2020, we still face a number of challenges, but will meet them with thorough planning and optimism.

We will continue to build our Club off the field with renewed enthusiasm to ensure that we continue the momentum we’ve created over the past few years. We will come back stronger.

Our focuses are clear for the remainder of 2020:

  1. The health and wellbeing of our senior players and members – the consequential impacts on the health, wellbeing and social connection of club members can not be underestimated. Continuing engagement and support will be the overwhelming priority over the coming months.
  2. Building our momentum off-field – we will continue our work off the field to strengthen our strategic and operational efforts.
  3. Our Juniors – what a fantastic opportunity for the Club to throw its full support behind our junior teams for the coming months and help foster the next generation of Boronia men and women.

We understand this news has been devastating for our members and encourage everyone to look at the wellbeing hub on our website, and continue to connect and support each other in a difficult time.

We also our encourage our members to be respectful with any commentary made on social media, as we understand that many may be feeling frustrated and disappointed with the decision.

For our Juniors, we’re excited to support you with all of the Club behind you. Coaches will begin to communicate with each group in the coming days.

If anyone has questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Scott on 0403 238 494. Thanks again to everyone in the HAWKA community. You’re all amazing, and YOU are the reason this Club is what it is today.

GO HAWKA.

200th Game for Matt Buzinskas

200 GAMES Matt Buzinskas

Please join us all in congratulating Matt Buzinskas on the occasion of this 200th Senior Game for Boronia Hawks in Round 17.

This is a massive achievement, with very few players reaching this milestone with the Hawks in recent years.  Even more remarkable is that Buzz has played at four other clubs during his career.

In fact, Buzz has racked up well over 350 games in total if we add on 89 junior games for Boronia; a junior season at North Ringwood; a senior premiership at Forrest in 2005, 17 games for Watsonia; and 17 games for Wantirna South!

Buzz has been a standout player for Boronia since his senior debut in 2006 as a seventeen year old, but with a rig and attitude well prepared for senior footy.  He has only played 2 games of Under 18’s footy and only 16 Reserves games so he has been a fixture in the senior team as an inside mid and crumbing forward.

Boronia Football Club Preseason Training
The Rig – 2015

Buzz’s goal sense has been a feature of his game, with 208 senior goals for the Hawka and a best of 7 in one game back in 2007.  There has been no greater sight in recent years than Buzz charging through the guts to kick a team-lifting goal then running back to the middle with a modest celebration as the Hawka faithful raise their voices, and cans,  to salute another Buzz special!

Buzz is a true champion of the Club.  He provides a great example for our young players and is still playing tremendous footy in 2019.  Congratulations to Buzz from everyone at Boronia Hawks.  We wish him, and his family, our very best wishes for his  milestone game and for many more to come.  We can’t wait to see him teaming up with Woody and Stifler in the Vets!

  • Senior Co-Captain in 2015.
  • 2018 Senior Premiership player.
  • 2012 Reserves Premiership player.
  • 150 Games Trophy in 2015.

Junior President’s Update

The Home & Away season has come to an end with Junior Finals starting this weekend.  We have U12Girls, U12, U13, U16Girls and U17’s heading into Round 1 of Finals.  The girls have a bye this week, but the boys are in full swing.  It is wonderful and exciting for these teams to have this opportunity.  Please get down and support them if you can.  All finals details are available on the EFL website.

As always it’s still a busy time of the season.  We see Boronia Auskick have it’s last session this coming Friday night.  This will be a fun night of games and presentations to all the children.  It’s also an opportunity for Auskickers moving up to next Under 8’s to get registered and ready for footy next season.

We have our Under 17 Presentation Evening on Saturday 31 August at the Knox Club.  This is quite a formal evening where the Under 17’s dress up in their finest as we announce the winner of the 2019 Ray Lacey Medal for Best & Fairest.   It is done this way, as the majority of these players have played their last year of Junior football, so it’s nice to make it special for them.   Our Junior Presentation Day for all other Junior Teams will be held on Sunday 8 September.  Details will be distributed shortly.

Miller Park is looking a treat and we look forward to heading back there for our 2020 Junior Season.  The surface will be an outstanding improvement of what is has been in the past and even Chandler Park became quite boggy by the end of the season.

The Junior Committee has been working hard on strategies to continue to increase numbers for the coming 2020 season.  They have also been busy working on building our Boronia Auskick program going forward.  Being part of our great Junior Committee is an extremely rewarding process.  Knowing that you can have a small impact on improving the club that your children play for is very satisfying.  I would encourage any parent who would like to get involved to please email us on boroniajnr@elf.org.au.

We are also seeking Junior Coaches for 2020.  All positions are open.  If you would like to have an opportunity to coach one of our Junior Teams, please ensure that you put your application in.  ALL 2019 coaches and potential coaches for 2020 need to apply for positions, it’s not just a given that this year’s coach will continue into next year.  No experience necessary as we will provide you with support and training course necessary to do a great job.

We are loving our new Training/Warm up tops!  Another order will be placed prior to the end of August and order forms will be sent out in the next week.  Orders will close quickly so ensure you put your order in as soon as the forms are release.  We also have great new Sports Bags available across the club.  These can be purchased the Club at on Thursday nights.

The Access All Abilities (AAA) NAB AFL Auskick program is designed to ensure that Auskick Centres are as inclusive as possible and that children of All Abilities have access to participate in the great game of AFL football.

The implementation of our Sensory Space at Boronia Auskick has been a significant reason for this recognition.

Sam Dunkinson, our Auskick Co-ordinator, uses the space to assist the kids who might get a little overwhelmed by everything and just need a quiet spot for a while.  The Club has been supported in this initiative through the generosity of our great supporter Sam Dib and Lipari Pizza Pasta.

Boronia Hawks Support EFL Silent Sunday.

Over the next two rounds, the Eastern Football League and Eastern Region Girls junior competitions will be launching a new initiative, ‘EFL Silent Sunday’. Some key objectives are:

  • Give players an opportunity to trust their skills and instincts without sideline input and/or correction.
  • Remind coaches, parents & players that PRACTICE is the time to learn and receive instruction. GAMES are to showcase their learning.
  • Remind everyone that junior football is solely for the kids and their enjoyment.
  • To support the umpires who are officiating the game and developing their skills

DO’s

  • Clap and cheer after each score only (for both sides).
  • Encourage players and umpires.
  • Enjoy the game

DON’T’s

  • Verbally abuse umpires.
  • Verbally attempt to correct or instruct umpire’s decision.
  • Verbally abuse players.
  • Verbally attempt to correct or instruct players.
  • Verbally abuse any opposition players, officials or supporters

Clubs also have the opportunity to opt-in with the two below extras; these however are not compulsory.

Quarter-time breaks
Clubs can opt to have no spectators on the ground during the quarter-time and three-quarter time breaks. This will help ensure the coaching/instructing messaging is coming from the coaching staff (please communicate with the opposition club’s team managers and announce on PA should your club wish to include this option).
PA announcements
Prior to the commencement of the game, those clubs with a working PA system can choose to deliver a message before each game (this has been communicated to clubs). Clubs may also utilise the PA at half time of games to remind spectators of the guidelines.

Auskick Volunteer of the Year Nomination for Sam Dunkinson!

Boronia Hawks are very pleased let all our supporters know that Samantha Dunkinson has been nominated for the AFL’s AUSKICK VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD. #auskickvoty #boroniahawks

65394918_10156508512847634_1276263091218153472_n

Sam is our Junior Vice-President and took on the role of Boronia Auskick Co-ordinator at the start of this year.   Boronia Auskick has gone from strength to strength under her guidance, with 105 registered players getting out for a kick on Friday nights at Tormore Reserve.

31081513_1675723415840457_6773574041845366784_o

Sam has got it all running smoothly, reflecting her training as a teacher.  Parents are getting involved in running the groups and we have senior players from both our men’s and women’s teams actively involved in helping the kids to develop their skills.

62428844_10156508697687634_6189752411381301248_n

Sam has brought an enormous passion and commitment to Boronia Auskick, resulting in some great initiatives.  She has brought sponsors Boronia McDonalds and Lipari Pizza on board to assist with funding of new equipment including footballs and water bottles.  Sam has also introduced a Sensory Space to assist the kids who might get a little overwhelmed by everything and just need a quiet spot for a while.

65004718_10156489709827634_7657232553333489664_n

Sam’s contribution to the Boronia Auskick has seen a real boost to our junior numbers with many Auskickers also choosing to play junior footy with Boronia Hawks.  Our two new Under 8’s teams are a direct result of the boost to our Auskick program over the past two years.

61423840_10156424483177634_7925324463489417216_n

Well done Sam!  We congratulate you on your well deserved nomination and wish you well when the awards are announced.  You are already a winner in our eyes!
