I’d say it was a fairly even and competitive game tonight against Blackburn. We managed to get a pretty good lead by half time, our biggest margin being 10 goals. Our third quarter was less dominant and Blackburn snuck up on us to bring the score back to even. At one stage they even managed to get a 2 goal lead.
Our defence end was on fire tonight. I can not praise Madison Barrie enough for her fantastic efforts, she was definitely a stand out performer for us. Her hard work and pressure ultimately won us the game. The combination of Madison and Sarah Alexander in defence was fantastic tonight, both girls put constant pressure on the Blackburn goalers and got countless turnovers. T onight was the first time these girls have played together, but they looked like seasoned experts in the ring. Even the coach from the opposition had praise for our defence end! Well done girls.
This week we celebrated Casey Hahn’s 60th game with Boronia. Congratulations Casey on such an achievement.
Going into the last round of the season before finals, sitting on top of the ladder and we took on the bottom of the ladder Belgrave South. We had 6 of our original team with one fill in, so no bench or coach!
Round 16: The Hawker vs Warrandyte (The Bloods) and a late change to the Hawker side would see Buzz rested and the opportunity for Dylan Dower to play his first senior game after a stellar year in the Development Squad.
A very interesting first quarter as the Bloods took the early ascendancy and kicked the first 2 goals of the day. They spread well off halfback, worked the ball long into their forward line. The Hawker looked pedestrian as they lamented between first and second gear. It’s not that the Hawker played bad or didn’t create scoring opportunities: they just didn’t play with the intensity needed at senior footy. This lead the Hawker to be beaten around the ground and were trailing on the scoreboard by 9 points at quarter time. Both sides lost players to shoulder / collar bone injuries to reduce the bench to 3 players. We wish Zac Dower a speedy recovery as he has made an outstanding start to his senior career.
The first bounce of second quarter you could see a lift in the Hawker. The midfield lead by the Skip LMc and fed by Hendo & Steeley went up a couple of gears to dominate the midfield contest. The Bloods were not resting on their first quarter heroics and still cracked in. The Hawker had the answers to the aggression, spread and running game they play so well on their home deck to allow the Hawker forwards to put scoreboard pressure on their opponents. The Hawker took a 6 point lead into the long break kicking 3 goals 4 to 1 goal 1 to the Bloods.
The 3rd quarter saw the Hawker bench reduced further with only 2 fit players available for rotations. Kicking against a slight breeze the Hawker wanted to, and did, make a statement to put the Bloods under pressure in what they call the premiership quarter. The backline controlled the Bloods forwards in conjunction with the Hawker dominance in the ruck to give the midfield first use to feed the Robbo & Robbo Show up forward. The Hawker outscored the opposition 6 goals to 1 to take a 37-point lead at 3/4 quarter time and to come home with the breeze in the last.
The last quarter was all about the Big Dog “Robbo Senior” as he put on a football clinic. Robbo was moved deep into the forward line after a couple of injuries and said to his team mates “this is my back yard, just get out of my way”! Robbo’s marking has always been a feature of his game but he has added roving skills to his resume, kicking 2 goals by scouting the ball off the pack. Add another 2 goals he kicked from contested marks and he had a fair day by kicking 7 goals straight, along with 15 scoring involvements. The Hawker’s day started slow but once the engine room stepped up its intensity out of the middle it laid a pathway for the Hawker to play team footy & win the contest by 66 points,
Special mention to Andy, Godders, Hammer, Rappa & Brayden Bowes who put the foot down when needed to stamp their class on the contest.

First week of finals are done. U11’s had a tough game in very windy conditions on Sunday against North Ringwood. Well done kids on a fantastic effort. These guys get a second chance this week against Bayswater at Heatherdale Reserve.
Our U14’s played also in tough windy and wet conditions and came away with the win against Forest Hill. They move to the 2nd Semi this Sunday against Montrose at Koonung Reserve.
The U17’s had the week off and take on Donvale this Sunday at Knox Gardens.
We really look forward to seeing senior players and supporters at the games to cheer on the junior teams. GO HAWKA!!
Boronia HAWKS v Norwood Black
I’m going to be a harsh coach and say that this week we did not play our cleanest netball. We were driving long and behind and had way too many unforced errors; we were working harder in attack to get the ball to goals than usual.
At half time I gave the girls a brutally honest ‘kick up the butt’ and told them to pick up their game; which they did.
Our defence end were our savours this week. Kasey Lee came to our rescue to fill in last minute and had an absolutely fantastic game in WD. Nat Craven and Madison Barrie were a great combination in defence against very physical goalers. Kasey, Nat and Maddy all played ripper games this week, gaining many turn overs for Hawks. A much better second half saw us take a convincing win 60-38, but maybe we should have won by more given Norwood are sitting bottom of the ladder. 2 games to go!

Boronia GOLD v Scoresby Soarers
I thought last week was a good win but this week was even better. Scoresby was strong in the first 1/4 and it was goal for goal. We were in front by a couple of goals at the end of the quarter and I thought it was going to be a fight to stay in front. We made a couple of changes and it just worked. Defence was tight and made it hard work for their goalers as they often only had one goaler in the ring. In the last half Sarah was on fire in goals, making great position and hardly missing a shot with 25 goals.
Everyone played an awesome game. Well done again!

Boronia BROWN v FTG White
A feisty and tough game for the Boronia Brown girls this week. This season we have come up against some strong and more physical teams, but this week was unlike any other. What we demonstrated was not only our strength on the court, but our mental strength and maturity. From the start of the game we fought hard to keep the scores as level as possible.
Courtney and Alex in defence held each other up during the game, literally speaking. Not only are Alex’s arms long, but when her full body weight is being held up by Courtney to allow her reach even longer, this makes an unbeatable force! A huge thank you to Naomi for filling in, her young legs were able to hold through the C for us whilst Lauren was away for the week.
Mollie, Sherridan and Amanda worked hard around the circles and bringing the ball down the court. With control, strength and good choices of play they did not need to tire themselves out by trying to play rushed as the opposition. Caitlin and Dani were very accurate and excelled under pressure, a confident goaler is key to success in the season and more importantly leading into finals.
In the last few minutes of the game we were down by 1 goal. With 1 and a half minutes to go, we won a turnover which resulted in a goal to make us even. Luckily after this goal it was then our centre pass to have us in the lead. In this time of nerves and pressure we were able to be calm, centred and take our time to ensure this centre pass resulted in us being in the lead. We scored the goal with no problems. This left 30-40 seconds on the scoreboard with a Ferntree Gully centre. A moment of calmness hit Mollie (WA) who turns to Caitlin (GA) and says ‘you know what, after this whole game I would actually be happy with draw’. But boy was she wrong.
Our hands on and screening pressure became too much for the GS on the opposition. The win by 1 point as the GS missed the goal in the final remaining seconds and for Alex to have the rebound was so much sweeter than any draw could ever be. Amazing game by the Boronia Brown team, a great reminder of sportsmanship, determination, and overall joy for the game. #getaroundthebrown

This week, we played Ferntree Gully who haven’t recorded as many wins as they probably would have liked. Either way, our team was out for redemption from our previous week’s loss.
The game started strong with a couple of fluent clearances and shots on goal. We emphasised the need to find our key forwards and looked dangerous when we did, especially with Bakes powering out of the forward line. Our mids got on top early with Jake, Harry, Trent and Hoff finding plenty of it. After being freed up from Saturday detention, Benny Anderson had a big role to play in the ruck all day, coming up against two taller players. He immediately made an impact around the ground with various intercept marks. Although we got a little lazy with our entries and subsequently kicked a few too many behinds, our impact on the game was significant at quarter time.
Ferntree Gully had the wind in the second and they managed to get some score on the board. Our backmen were keeping tight though and some excellent rebounding from Brody, Will, Sturds, Dos and Lee allowed us to move the ball into the wind with effective run and carry. Some quick switching to our runners, such as Cambo, Ryan and Johnny allowed our entries to improve. The half time break came around with a promising lead, although we weren’t completely.satisfied that we’d found our best footy yet.
The third quarter provided a few players with new opportunities, such as Milky moving into the middle. His work around the contest was sensational, particularly with selfless acts to support his teammates. The likes of Lukey Slater, Connor, Tuna and Jacko started to really impact the game, as did Under 17 fill ins, Kyle Schmidtke and Heath Rouse. Despite Ferntree Gully remaining strong, we opened up the gap to a healthy lead at 3 quarter time.
The fourth quarter saw some gutsy efforts and a bit of physicality. We remained disciplined though and moved the ball well. Ferntree Gully added a few more goals to their tally, but we ensured that we balanced it out with a few of our own. A very satisfying win and a basis for our next couple of weeks.

We hosted Ferntree Gully Eagles Football Club on Saturday, who 12 months ago gave the Hawker a football lesson on our home deck for the first 3 quarters until the Hawker over ran them in the last. With finals like weather, could the Hawker build on last week’s form?
Great conditions greeted the players at the start of the first quarter. The Hawker were first out of the blocks with Buzz kicking 3 goals in the first 15 minutes. Zac Robbo added another with a talented kick over his head while on the ground. Big Robbo and Josh Hannon added to the Hawker total. We had good players all over the ground, with consistent ball movement while kicking with a slight breeze. The backline, in conjunction with the midfield, kept the Eagles to one goal kicked on the quarter time siren. The Hawker took a handy 34 point lead into the 1stbreak.
The second quarter was much like the first with the Hawker putting strong forward pressure on the Eagles backline. This was enforced at the 7 minute mark by young Chinny’s chase and tackle having an Eagles player caught holding the ball in the scoreboard end forward pocket. The resulting free kick put through for a skilful goal to reward Chinny for the fantastic run and pressure. Zac Robbo kicked another 2 goals and The Lake Show ran down from full back not just once but twice to mark and kick truly to add to the Eagles woes. The quarter was finished off by a late goal to Josh Hannon for his second of the day to give the Hawker a 64 point lead over the Eagles at the main break.
Into the 3rd quarter and the question was: will the Hawker relax or will they keep the pressure on the Eagles? It wasn’t long until we found out as Buzz slotted his fourth for the day 90 seconds into the 3rd, followed by Josh Hannon who kicked his 3rdgoal. Big Robbo and Hendo chimed in for goals to extend the Hawkers’ lead to 91 points. The Hawker had winners in every position and transitioned the ball between the arcs with skill and team work.
At the start of the last quarter the Hawker were down a few numbers on the bench with a couple of players rested. It would be a gruelling last 25 minutes for a couple of players who would have to run out the quarter without a rotation. The Eagles came out hard and were showing strong commitment at the contest but the Hawker were up to the challenge to control the last quarter. Full credit to the Eagles who out scored the Hawker in the last but the damage was done and the Hawker ran out victors by 78 points.

The Hawker Shopping Early.
We expected a hard, close contest against the Heathmont Jets Football Club for our round 14 clash on their home ground and that’s what we received.
Those who witnessed the Hawkers’ 1st quarter against the Jets would agree that this was 30 minutes of fast, quality, disciplined team footy from the Hawker. From the opening bounce we were hard at the ball, clean with our hands and precise with our foot skills. The Hawker excited their supporter base as they ran in waves, tackled, smothered and took strong contested marks against an opposition who seemed shell shocked and could not match the pace of the Hawker.
A great team effort with the backline holding the opposition to a solitary behind while the Hawker kicked 6 goals 6 to take a 41-point lead into quarter time.
The Hawker knew that the Jets would not lie down. They were playing on their home deck, a large home crowd, hosting a past players day and kicking to the downhill scoring end. The quarter started ok for the Hawker as we matched the Jets’ early goals to keep up the scoreboard pressure. At the 10 minutes mark you could see the Jets building their spread and running game off the backline and across the centre. Their quality players started to get their hands on the ball and distributed with confidence and accuracy. The Jets outscored The Hawker 6 goals 3 to 3 goals to reduce the Hawkers’ lead to 20 points at the long break.
The expectation was that the Hawker would kick to the scoring end and put scoreboard pressure on the Jets. This expectation would be further from the truth as the 3rd quarter was played in close, hard and contested with both sides missing important scoring opportunities. Brayden Bowes put his brand on the game with a great quarter of footy. Harry “Snake” Burgess controlled the Jets’ big forward and the midfield fed the forwards but neither side could not kick a major. The Hawker added 5 behinds while the Jets added 6 behinds for the quarter giving the Hawker a 19-point lead going into the last.
Big crowds circled both huddles as we awaited the last quarter to start. Like the 3rd, the quarter started with both sides playing contested footy. There was a buzz around the ground as the first goal for either side would have a big say in the outcome of the game. First blood came at the 12-minute mark to the Hawker to put a 22-point gap on the Jets. For the next 10 minutes the Hawker contributed a couple of undisciplined acts and this, combined with the Jets’ pressure, allowed the Jets to kick the next 3 goals. We should highlight the fact that the Jets had a number of opportunities to take marks in their forward 50 in the last 2 minutes but some fantastic spoils and one on one wins in contests saw the Hawker take a 4-point win against a very good side.
