Netball Match Reports

Boronia Hawks

Well that was a ripper of a game!  Hawks started off a little slow (as usual) losing the first quarter by 6.  Mandy Bell went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter and we had to switch things up.  We started to bring our game together in the second and took a lead in the third quarter.  Lilydale are a strong and competitive team and they had no intention of letting us win easily.  It went right to the end with us scoring the winning goal with 5 seconds to go!  Hawks won by 1 goal 36-35

New team member Mel Hutton settled into the team, well having a fantastic game in goals with Emily Barrie.  As usual our defence was strong against goalers who rarely missed.  Ally had a fantastic game in Centre and was a stand out performer tonight.  Absolutely fantastic game to watch, every girl deserves a mention as everyone really did have a fantastic game!

We will be put to the test next week against Lions, especially given we will be missing our 2 tall key defenders……..great game ladies a well fought win!

Boronia Brown

Boronia Brown 29 defeated North Ringwood 22

With a very quick opposing team we started a little rushed but then took them to our controlled game.  In the 3rd quarter we got a strong lead and dominated the court.  Dani played a ripper game in goals hardly missing at all, with Sherridan and Mollie assisting in GA.  A big thank you to Bec Allen for coming to coach and fill in for a few quarters.  Your guidance for all players, especially through the mid court is invaluable. It’s great to learn during the game as well as in the breaks!

Great game for all players, we held the lead in the last quarter well and didn’t let the pressure shake us.  This win seals our spot as 4th on the ladder with a one game lead on 5th.  Great game everyone! #getaroundthebrown

D Squad Match Report for Round 10: Boronia v Donvale

After a night of heavy rain we arrived to find our ground in great nick for football and not what we anticipated on Thursday night at all.  With no one missing a game this week due to some player injuries and unavailabilities it was easier at team selection this week.  In a milestone game for B Castersen, 50 senior games with the Hawks, and Patto coming back to give some needed experience to our forward line; we were confident our form of early in the season would return.  We talked about courage and game goals prior and we were ready to take on the second bottom side and kick a large score.

That was all good in theory but our demons returned and we played as we had finished against our previous opponents two weeks prior.  It wasn’t from lack of effort, we just didn’t connect thee dots.  With Carro dominating at stoppages we still found space hard to come by and allowed Donvale to put pressure on our ball carriers.  The first and second quarters were a slog for both teams and honestly, you would have thought we had just encountered 30mm of rain for almost an hour of footy.  The back line was solid but we lacked drive through the middle and half forward.  Z Dower, Smithy, Carro, Sugar and Romano were keeping us in the game and at the long break we were two points in arrears.

After some home truths and some team challenges, with consequences if they weren’t followed, we took the field for the second half.  We looked like a different team.  With short accurate kicking, better decision making, and courageous tackling, we were winning the ball and looking something like we did half a dozen weeks back.  With the ball starting to enter the forward fifty with some purpose, we knew goals would follow.  The first 10 minutes was pressure footy and we didn’t take a backward step.  We wore them down and gained much needed confidence.  M Smith and Stamma tackled strongly and turnovers were now in our favour.  Patto was putting forward pressure on their backs and could have kicked six or seven if the gods had favoured him.  The final term was played pretty much on our terms and with four massive tackles by Stamma we now had the game on our terms, goals were looking likely, and we played like a team.  We now look forward to Belgrave South and continuing our second half into next week.

Senior Match Report for Round 10: Boronia v Donvale

The Round 10 clash against Donvale saw the Hawka boys get off to a flying start, with 4 straight clearances and goals within the first 7 minutes. Quick goals to Josh Hannon and Rappa were immediately backed up by Godwin and the skipper, LMac. Chompers, Rappa and Godwin found plenty of the ball early and looked to be a class above their opponents. The Hawka big men up forward played with purpose and wasted no time to assert their dominance, presenting well up the ground. They consistently dished the footy off to our runners, making the most of the forward 50 entries.  Noticeably, the team pressure acts and selfless blocks were right up, creating additional time for effective ball use.  On the few occasions the ball travelled up the other end, our reliable backs intercepted and switched the ball to allow quick entries back up the attacking end.  Donvale were forced to play a wide game and didn’t attack the corridor, resulting in several out of bounds on the full, whereas Boronia looked to attack the middle more often.  A fifth goal came at the hands of Brayden Bowes at the 15 minute, as Donvale were left scratching their heads.  Their first score eventually came as a behind just after the 19 minute mark. Insert Tyler Steele. The big man backed up Hendo’s early dominance and managed to kick a handy goal out of a forward contest just as 23 minutes had passed.  Donvale’s first clearance followed, but it was bottled up and stopped by some gutsy teamwork from Huey, Fairchild and Johnno.  Well into extra time and the rain started. Finally Donvale looked to score, but a sensational chase down tackle on the 50 by Hammer stopped their flow. At quarter time it was Boronia 6.1.37 to Donvale 0.1.1.

With all of the momentum and energy, the Hawker boys exited the huddle with a message of building on a positive first quarter effort.  The second started with a Donvale clearance, which was immediately intercepted by big Lakey.  The Hawka tackling pressure transferred into the second quarter and bottled up the ‘Vales’ movement. Our first scoring opportunity came at the 6 1/2 minute mark when Wrighty kicked the footy into the goal post under pressure.  A nasty knee to the middle of his back saw Josh Hannon’s day come to an end at the 8 minute mark. Then, as if on cue, his brother responded with an impressive goal.  The score flow drastically reduced from this point and it wasn’t until a missed banana attempt by Fairchild at the 23 minute mark did any real action kick in.  Donvale quickly responded by going end to end, kicking their first goal. The rain started to increase and at half time it was 7.7.49 to 1.3.9.

Returning after the main break, the rain had stopped but the surface was wet and that meant more defensive footy.  Besides an early behind to Donvale, there was no score until the 8 minute with a behind to Luke Hannon. After another missed opportunity to Tyler Steele, Donvale eventually kicked the first major of the quarter at the 11 1/2 minute mark. They immediately backed it up with another goal, just as the rain started again.  When the going gets tough, the tough get going and that’s exactly the approach our returning players took. Andy and Chinny stepped up their running game and Buzz won a heap of contested ball, but unfortunately missed two consecutive opportunities in front of goal.  Rappa also kicked a behind (from the boundary) and Donvale pounced on the opportunity to punish our mistakes just as 20 minutes ticked over on the clock.  After the early dominance in the game, the margin was now reduced to 25 points and a comeback wasn’t out of the question for Donvale.  Wrighty made a move into the ruck, which temporarily proved beneficial as he managed to crumb his own footy and feed it off to Fairchild who kicked a much needed goal at the 25 minute mark – the only Hawka goal for the quarter!

After some honesty from the coaches and inspiring words from the leaders, it was time to shift the momentum back in our favour. Hendo and Rappa combined for an early clearance to spot up Lakey who made the move forward.  He quickly followed with a long kick to the square, setting up Brayden Bowes, who got a free to kick the first within a minute.  Backing up immediately, Hendo gave first use to our kids and a handy clearance from LMac resulting in him spotting up Robbo. We’re back!  Some great pressure and movement from the likes of Harry, Hammer, Godwin and Bolts kept the ball forward.  Buzz got on the end of some great movement to kick his first major on the run.  Back that up with a goal to Lakey at the 9 minute mark and another to LMac from a forward 50 stoppage minutes later, it is safe to say that our class was yet again shining through.  Some excellent run from Huey to Chinny on the wing set big Robbo up for another opportunity, which was eventually rushed. It was at this moment that this supporter witnessed something for the first time. Bobby Henry and his analysis team almost wet themselves laughing as the Donvale player attempted to play on from a kick in but was a little overzealous with the kick and gave Boronia another behind. I guess pressure can cause all kinds of mishaps! Donvale’s continued to find it difficult to get the ball out of their back half, much to the delight of Luke Hannon who kicked another at the 17 minute mark. With a bit more hustle, Lakey’s strong last quarter performance was rewarded with another goal prior to the final siren. A handy 72 point victory in the end.

Five points from the game:

• The versatility of our players hurts other teams;
• Effective rebound off half-back destroys opposition on Tormore;
• Strong starts and finishes to a game are vital, although the better teams won’t be so forgiving with lapses in the middle;
• “Strong inside, fast outside” is a theme that repeats itself when we play well;
• There is evidence of significant depth in the playing group.

U19’s Match Report: Round 10 Boronia v Donvale

Mitch Mellis making a guest appearance.

After a lengthy break and various interruptions, the game against Donvale was one that we’d be preparing for over a number of weeks.  Add to that, the inclusion of Mitch Mellis back from Eastern Ranges provided us even more confidence to execute and achieve our team goals.

We got off to a flyer in the first quarter through dominance in the midfield.  Benny Anderson had his work cut out for him in the ruck and through the support of the 3 Mellis brothers and Harry, he found a way to beat his opponent all over the ground.  Effective use out of the middle, including great run down the wings from Ryan, Sammy Fung, Johnny and Jimmy, gave our forwards ample opportunity to capitalise – 18 inside 50 entries in fact! The quarter time break saw us 7.1.43 to a scoreless opposition.

The key to our second quarter was to not get ahead of ourselves and to ensure we maintained the same disciplined approach.  The backline remained patient and rock solid.  Linking up and rebounding the footy was something we focused on and executed well through the likes of Will, Sturds, Lee Fletcher, Hammer, Hoff, Dos and Milky, who made a welcomed return from injury. The pattern of quick scoring seemed to slow down, although the ball movement and pressure were maintained.  Bakes continued to be dangerous up forward and was well supported by Connor, Muels, Brody and Tuna.  Notley also managed to get on the train ride as he started to prove why he is a dangerous forward.  A late move saw Hoff go forward – never have you seen a young footballer with such a bounce in his step!  At half time, Donvale managed only 2 behinds with the wind and the lead increased 57 points.

The feeling was good at half time and the team seemed to be maintaining focus.  We set ourselves some targets for the third quarter to ensure we kept progressing our game.  Hoff remained up forward and the rest of the team built on the first half dominance.  Ben Anderson and Mitch Mellis stepped up their game and combined with those around them to explode the ball forward an outstanding 22 times.  With 7 more goals added to the scoreboard and another scoreless quarter from the opposition, the lead was now 104 points at 3 quarter time.

The coaches had a chat about maintaining consistency in our approach to achieve a four quarter performance versus the opportunity to develop players in some new positions.  We agreed to make a few changes, including Bakes into the midfield, J Mellis to CHF, Jimmy moving down back and Milky up forward.  Unfortunately, we didn’t apply the same discipline and allowed Donvale to move the ball forward with more ease.  We learnt quickly after the game about remaining structured for 4 quarters and maintaining effective communication.  To the opposition’s credit, they scored a couple of goals and outscored us for the quarter.  Nonetheless, hard work early pays off and we enjoyed the 90 point win.

 A big effort on the track is required by all players this week. With the potential for 5 players to return for our game against Sth Belgrave, the pressure for selection is on!

Women’s Footy Match Report – We have hit the scoreboard!

This was a highly anticipated game of football with Boronia taking on the visitors from Thornton-Eildon in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Tormore Reserve.  Both teams struggle a bit up forward, so the game was set to be tight.  The Hawks welcomed Lina Kabris to the team for her first game and were also very pleased to have Briar Forrer-Lacey back in action after her return from China the night before the game!  We had a strong lineup this week despite missing three key players in Sam MellisKat Buzinskas and Lana Kitteringham from the previous game.

The first quarter was intense, with lots of hard footy as the ball rebounded up and down the ground.  As always, Rhiannon Smith and Phoebe Lacey were working hard in the last line of defence; Candyce Wright, Charmaine Chu on the outer side and Jess Buzinskas and Tegan Doran on the members side of the ground were all keeping busy and racking up possessions.  Chloe Timms was doing well in the ruck.  Both teams were here to play, but Thornton-Eildon snuck through for a goal against the run of play.   Only seven points down at quarter time and there was a sense that the Hawks were right in this one.

The Hawks attacked relentlessly in the second, with Amanda DavidsonDee Caiafa and Briar driving the ball forward.  Amanda Cellante even took two bounces as she dashed through the guts!  Then it happened – the opposition lost their structure under pressure and the ball spilled free to Brynie Kinniff who pounced on the loose ball in the goal square and scored the historic first goal for the Hawks!  The girls mobbed each other to celebrate the goal and the crowd erupted with cheering and applause as the wild scenes continued on-field!  Co-coaches Ray Lacey and Scott Nicholas embraced on the bench as Sam, our runner for the day, ran on to the field and jumped up and down in jubilation!  Back to business though as Thornton-Eildon lifted their game to lead by 21 points at half-time.

The third quarter saw more hard yakka around the packs.  Enter Bec Allen and Courtney Storen who both thrive with the hard ball gets, while Darcy Flanagan and Alix Penny kept up the tackle pressure.  The deeper bench of Thornton-Eildon meant that fresh legs were now making an impact at the scoring end as they ran the ball forward to create more opportunities, taking them to seven goals.  Did the Hawks have enough in the tank to run out the game?

Dee Caiafa was on fire in the last quarter, taking one memorable run of 30 meters without a bounce, but also carving up the back line to break through for a behind soon followed by a team-lifting goal!  It now seemed that the girls saw their chance as the forward line came alive with Stacey Peril, Jasmine Lacey and Karen Little getting dangerous and creating opportunities.  Amanda “Davo” Davidson and Jess Buzinskas were playing tough footy in the final stanza, locking the ball in to our half.  Courtney and Chloe both took strong contested marks inside 50 but found the big sticks were elusive with the tricky breeze.

The Hawks were down by 41 points when the siren went, but the whole side had played their best footy for the season.  With a number of players back soon, including Demi Thomas, the signs are good if the consistent approach to training continues.  The whole Club was buzzing after the game and the girls won a lot of friends amongst the Hawk supporters watching them for the first time.

Netball Match Reports – 3 Wins!

HAWKS def Montrose Demons 66-31 (J. Rush 52, E. Barrie 14)

Hawks had a fantastic win over Montrose on Friday night, winning 66-31.  Even with two new players filling in for us this week, Hawks were strong right from the start.  It was lovely clean and controlled game of Netball played by Hawks.

Thank you to Carli Den Braber and Kasey Lee who both played great games for us this week in the mid court.  Julia and Emily Barrie dominated the goal end together and both Ally and Ellie had a fantastic game in the centre. Great game team!

GOLD def Kilsyth Cougars Black 34-21 (J. Hall 20, S. Grigg 9, C. Hahn 5)

Second win in a row!  In the first half of the game we managed to have a two goal lead with some tight defence by Inga and Janae.  With a change in goals at half time, Jess and Casey worked well together, offering many options to pass into the ring and they were on.  Inga was on fire, with many turnovers giving us the opportunity to push the lead out to 10.  Stacy was strong in centre, making position down the court.  Awesome work everyone!

BROWN def Wantirna South Devils White 18-29 (D. Kemp 28, S. Martin 1)

After starting off a little rusty in this late 9.45pm game, the whole team pulled together in the 2nd quarter and dominated from then on.  We are learning how each other plays and what our strengths are as a united team.  With the continuous support from the sidelines from our bench, spectators and scorers this brings up our spirit all throughout each game.

The win has taken us up to 4th on the ladder which is fantastic as we came into the section late!  This week we welcomed Caitlin Yann to our team. Caitlin will be a great addition throughout the mid court and defence!

D Squad Match Report: Round 9 Boronia v Ringwood

Another great day for football greeted us at our home ground.   The girls were kicking goals and we were eager to show our wares as well.  A late call up for Wrighty and a chance to see Patty Kinniff in action at last.  Ready for battle we looked good on paper once again and everyone was eager to make amends for our last outing.

The first was messy and once again forward delivery started poorly.  If not for one of our smaller brigade in Cam Flanagan we may have struggled to score a major in the term.  Everyone is trying there hardest but rhythm just isn’t quite there at the moment.  It will come when we play as a team and demand more from ourselves.

The backline was again in charge and delivered the ball forward time after time. Trying a few moves can unsettle the team but we need to know who can stand up under pressure, so some players were out of their regular spots.

We were mostly in charge of play but turnovers cost us on plenty of occasions.  Milde was leading the way with his ability to read the flight of the ball and then use it wisely.  Kinniff was marking strongly, getting into position and beating his opponent hands down.

The Dowers are having a great season and are raising the bar each game they play.  With Carro delivering the ball by hand we should dominate every ball up.  Our opponents work to his dominance and we must mix it up better in coming weeks.

Leading at the long break, the challenge was five  goals in the third, but it wasn’t to be and Ringwood out scored us.  Not with better skills but with more desperation at the ball.  We looked tired in the second half and perhaps the week off will reenergise us. We must play better against stronger teams.  This is our challenge.  We have the players and the skills – we now need to gel it all together.

After the week off we will have several players ready to return from various injuries and once again spots in the team will be at a premium. Training will dictate who pulls on the boots for our next game.

Senior Match Report: Round 9 Boronia v Ringwood

“If we were going to fly the flag…….” by The Voice in the Outer

A huge day awaited the Hawks crowd as the top two sides were playing off for top spot and bragging rights.  Each side was missing a few regular players but there was plenty of talent on display.

I don’t know how many tosses we’ve won this year, but again we kicked against the breeze in the first.  Ringwood had come to play and took full advantage of the breeze. They worked the Hawker over in our forward half, pressured us around the stoppages and worked harder across the ground.  Robbo Junior took a great mark and kicked true for the Hawkers’ only goal for the quarter.  Ringwood were helped by a couple of very technical free kicks but deserved their 3 goal lead at 1/4 time.

Into the 2nd and kicking to the scoring end, The Hawker started to win a few clearances and we saw five minutes of brilliance by “COLLO” kicking two snap goals from 30 metres to capitalise on the good work out of the guts.  When the Hawker gets its’ hand ball game going even the best sides in the comp find it hard to stop.  The Hawker showed glimpses of the previous eight weeks form but were a bit gun shy to run and carry the footy.  Ringwood showed again that they are a well-structured and well coached side by kicking a couple of late goals to take a 16-point lead into the long break.

The 3rd quarter was played mainly in Ringwood’s forward half.  The Hawker backline competed well against the continual opposition forward entries and held firm for most of the quarter. Kyle Matthews, number 17 for Ringwood, brought his own footy and was devastating by foot and continually set Ringwood up from his team’s defensive side.  The quarter was a real arm wrestle with both sides only kicking a single goal each until Ringwood broke the stalemate, after being awarded another technical ruck free kick in the ruck, to kick their second goal for the quarter to extend their lead to 25 points at 3/4 time.  What I didn’t like was seeing an injured Boronia player on his knees trying regain his breath and an opposition player standing over him, getting stuck into him.  If we were going fly the flag then this would have been the time to do it.

For the first three quarters the Hawker had played very much within themselves, very much non-risk safe football.  Even though we started the last quarter with plenty of energy and looked to negate Ringwood’s defensive setup by playing a seven man back line, we had a number of good opportunities to close the gap on the scoreboard but were continually shut down by inconsistent ball movement.  The quarter finished with both sides kicking two goals each and Ringwood winning the game by 25 points.

Ringwood were the far better side today and deserve to be clear flag favourites.  They have a great setup behind the ball and spread well.  Their general in the backline (number 17) controlled the game all day.  For the Hawks, we had a number of solid contributors, but also had a few boys down on their season form to date.  We didn’t play the footy that we played in the first 8 rounds.  Today we lost, but from what I saw from the outer we have plenty of upside and there is nothing the Hawker can’t handle that was dished up by Ringwood today.   We can close the gap if we get back to our game plan.  We have had a fantastic first half of the season, so everyone enjoy the long weekend and see you when we play Donvale.

Go Hawks.
