Netball Match Reports: Round 12 Friday 20 July

HAWKS

Good game tonight against Wantirna South Devils Reserve, we took the win 71-52.  It wasn’t our most consistent performance but we did have times of fantastic, positive play.  Once we settled into our own game we drove ahead to take a good lead.  Mandy Bell was good in defence, playing very tight in GK in the 2nd quarter but unfortunately had to come off with an ankle injury.  Ally Forrest jumped into GK and did a great job, taking heaps of interceptions; impressive effort for a mid court player, playing totally out of her usual position.  Talking defence, Amy Hazard totally smashed it in GD, this girl never stops working!

Carla Alexandra, who’s had a pretty terrible week and who played despite not feeling well, managed to play a full game in WD.  Great game Carla, you got your hand to lots of balls and great back up in defence.
Emily Barrie rescheduled her night to play (thanks Em) and had a ripper game in GA.  Emily and Julia have lots of playing experience together and you can see it on the court.  These two girls play very well together – 71 goals scored tonight!  Sharmini Philp had an excellent game in WA and the combination of Sharmini and Ellie Ingwersen in the mid court really improved our drives and feeding to the ring.

Only 3 more games till finals!!!   So far we’ve had some really great games and I’m looking forward to seeing you all bringing your best to finish the season and move into finals.

GOLD

Wow! What a win against Norwood.  We started strong and finished strong.  Once again our defenders (Janae and Inga) were tight, turning over many balls and rebounding missed shots.  Mid court (Ti, Stacey and Sarah) were always there to pass to and put pressure on when defending.  Our goalers (Jess, Casey and Chanelle) work so well together. Doesn’t matter what combination we have in goals.  A special mention to Chanelle this week, she played a different position every 1/4 and smashed it.  She is such an asset to our team!

BROWN

Another great game by all players this week.  We came out very strong and by half time the opposition only had only 5 goals.  We are now reaching the end of the season which means we are trialling finals combinations and working on refining our skills and teamwork.  Our improvement from the beginning of the season has been extremely obvious as we are showing on the court, scoreboard and ladder.  We have now moved up to 3rd position which is strong leading into finals.
This week we take on 4th who have been sitting in the top 2 all season until now.  It will be a tough game but a good eye opener to what we should expect in a few weeks in finals.

Development Squad Match Report: Boronia v The Basin

Today we would mix the coaching up for something a bit different with Wrighty Senior in charge and after some great words before the game we were ready to go.  The out come of todays game was always going to be determined by who one the hard ball at ground level, that’s the way they play footy.  With Carro back from injury and Wrighty in great form we were always going to get first touch in the middle.  We had practiced clearances and forward entry on Thursday and early it looked as if it would pay dividends.

The first term was played in two halves the clearances were fifty-fifty and they played off Carro’s knocks, with some good ball movement we looked to be on.  In the last ten minutes of the term with Wright in the ruck we cleared four times to Dylan Dower and had the best forward entries we’d had in weeks. This allowed Patto and J Stama a good look at the footy.

The second term was even, pressure football played mostly between the back lines.  We would clear from half back only to have the opposing back line bring it straight back.  It was a good game to be a spectator.  With some great contests across the ground the scales were evenly balanced at the long break.

The second half would see us play safe footy down the lines mostly and this is not the brand we want to play.  We must take the game on and be braver with the ball – play as we train is what we want.  Use the space and work hard to use our team mates who have run to open space.  Granland was free all day and we used him only once.  With only a kick in it at three quarter time we had a delay with an umpire down.

Going into the final term the game was going to won by the smarter team.  The Basin wanted a battle fought through stoppage after stoppage and we played into their hands.  It was an arm wrestle and we had our opportunities but we will learn and be brave with our footy from now on.  We had some great contributors today.  It was great to see Jake Whitmore having an impact, with all players doing their bit for the team.  We only need to find another five to ten percent to win games like this.

U19’s Match Report: Boronia v The Basin

The early game saw a big clash between 3rd place Hawks and 4th place Bears.  After scraping through with a couple of wins in the previous rounds, we were out to regain some confidence and pride.  On the small deck, it was a congested and physical game from the onset.  We managed to kick a quick goal to get the ball rolling thanks to a running wobbler from the boundary by the speedster, Ryan Williams. The Basin hit back with some positive ball movement forward, although our pressure ensured that they remained goalless come quarter time.  With a late goal from Under 17s player, Mason Storr, we entered the break with a nine point lead.

The second half remained congested and the effective tackle count was already breaking records.  It was coming down to the team who could remain disciplined and united the most.  The Basin managed a couple of goals throughout the second quarter, but so did we.  The late inclusion of Kyle Notley was not wasted as he managed to get onto to a handy one out the back of the contest and slot through a major.  The other came from a free kick to another Under 17s player filling in, Nathan Hare.  Harey was everywhere and did not look out of place for a second, tearing apart the opposition backline and midfield.  The main break saw us up by 7 points. The boys were full of confidence at half time and were eager to ensure the game kept progressing in our favour.

We applied pressure from the start and did our best to nullify their key ball winners.  As a result, The Basin found it increasingly difficult to get the ball forward and when they did, some brilliance from our backline stopped the majority of flow, particularly several contested marks to the in-form Lee Fletcher. A strong goal to Josh Baker and a cheeky goal to the half-back flanker, Bailey Campbell, helped us to maintain our 7 point lead at 3-quarter time.

Whilst the contest remained close on the scoreboard, we felt like we were controlling the game and needed to punish them on the scoreboard in the last quarter, otherwise all of the hard work would have been wasted.  With a slight shuffle around to provide improved balance, we increased our ball control and our flair (insert massive plucks to Jacko Lech and Cooper Dunkinson from the 17s) whilst maintaining the huge tackle count.  The Bears only managed the single goal in the final term, although we found majors through both Luke Slater and Josh Baker. A satisfying and fulfilling victory by 15 points over the local rival.  We now shift our focus to the 2nd placed Heathmont, who are arguably the flag favourites at this point of the season. Go Hawks!

Seniors Match Report – Boronia v The Basin

A big day of footy awaited the 19’s, D Squad and Seniors as we played traditional rivals The Basin at Batterham Park. For the seniors this game was an opportunity to get back to playing team footy and putting a gap on the ladder between the top 3 and the rest of 3rd division.

The Hawker started the 1st quarter full of run.  Our midfield ran hard both ways and continually drove the ball into our forward line.  Josh Hannon kicked our first goal with a crisply timed drop punt from 45 meters on the run.  Whitey, Luke Hannon and the skip were in everything; Robbo “Senior” was pivotal across half forward and our backline combined to rebound the opposition forward attacks.  The quarter was soured by the serious injury to Jayden Collins who was thrown to the ground in a tackle and had to be taken to hospital for tests and observation.  Dangerous sling tackles need to be taken out of our game.  The Hawker should have kicked a couple more goals but finished 23 points in front of The Basin at quarter time: 4.5 29 to 1.0 6.

The Basin have not won a game this year against the top 4 sides and the Hawker coaching staff knew they would come out hard in the second and that’s what happened.  The Basin’s hard running off their half backline and through the middle was a feature of their play.  The Hawker worked hard but turned the ball over a number of times which gave The Basin the opportunity to put scoreboard pressure on The Hawks.  The Basin’s ground can open you up or close you down if you cough up the ball to the opposition.  The Basin played their home ground exactly this way to dominate the Hawker in parts of the quarter.  If not for The Basin’s inaccuracy (3 goals 7 points to 1 goal 1 point) in front of goal the scoreboard could have been worse; with the Hawker taking a slender 5 point lead into the main break.

The third quarter was played in a close, tight and highly contested manner by both sides.  Even though our backline was undersized against the taller opposition they continually transitioned the ball from defence to attack.  Hammer was front and centre in scouting the ball off the deck, the twin towers across half forward (Robbo and Robbo) started to gel with Robbo Junior gaining confidence after a long layoff and kicked a big goal.  Brayden Bowes started to influence the game and chipped in with 2 goals of his own to give the Hawker a 21 point lead going into three quarter time.  Boronia 8.7 55 to The Basin 4.10 34.

There was a large Hawker crowd at the three-quarter time huddle.  Clarky addresses his players in a controlled manner and makes a point of the team KPI’s.  The next 30 minutes would need a team effort if we were to hold off The Basin who would be kicking to the scoring end to the roar of their fanatical supporters.

The fourth quarter was played similar to the third: a physical game with a lot of stoppages and a lot of tackles.  The momentum changed when Josh Hannon delivered a big goal to kick his 3rd for the day and put a 25 point margin on the opposition.  Even though The Basin had many opportunities to kick goals in the last 10 minutes of the quarter, the Hawker held firm against the 4th highest offensive side in the league (Boronia is 5th); the Hawker taking a well-deserved 18 point victory over our traditional rival.

Five Points:

  • We wish a quick recovery to both Collo and the Reserves ump who went down at 3/4 time.
  • The team effort was the catalyst to give us a victory to help set up the rest of our year.
  • Midfield provided great support for our big forwards.
  • Backline kept the opposition to only 1 goal in the second half.
  • A crack down on dangerous sling tackles is needed.

Netball Match Reports from 13 July

HAWKS – Premier Division
Boronia Hawks v Wantirna South Devils Round 11  A little bit of pre-game stress as my team dropped to 6 players 1 hour before the game… Lucky for us, Kasey Lee was able to chuck on her dress and runners, drive all the way from Frankston and play an absolute ripper of a game for us!  Thanks Kasey for coming to our rescue.

We knew tonight was going to be a tough game against 2nd seated Wantirna South Devils (we are currently sitting 4th).  As usual our first quarter was our biggest loss: 5-13 (maybe we need to start warming up better ladies!!!!); but as usual we picked up our game and showed them we weren’t losing without a fight.  In the 3rd quarter we got to within 3 goals but we just couldn’t keep up the fight and ended up losing 41-53.

Tonight’s score really doesn’t represent the quality of Netball we played.  It really was a great game of Netball with lots of positive play.  I’d say Wantirna beat us with their full court defence, defensive turnovers and their fitness tonight.  Amy Hazard was a stand out for us in GD; Amy – you played a very classy and skilful game against some questionable play.  You had countless turnovers, deflections and drive down the court.  Awesome game tonight, super happy to have you playing with us!  Mel Hutton proved her versatility and showed us she’s got the skills to step out of goals and run the Centre and, despite injury, Ally had a great 2nd half in WA.  Both our goalers; Emily Barrie and Sharmini-Jane Philp had to work very hard for each and every goal scored tonight! I t took a little while for our goalers to settle into their groove against some tough defenders, but once our mid-courters started feeding into the front positions both girls started to score well.  A pretty damn good effort against a very good team.  Well done Hawks!  Next week we play Wantirna South Reserves at Knox at 8pm.

GOLD – Division 3
Round 11 Boronia Gold v Upper Ferntree Gully The first half of our games are definitely or strongest. Our defence was tight with many turnovers by Inga and Ti, and plenty of options to pass down the court with mid court re-offering.  As always Jess giving the wings easy passing into the ring, Jess and Sarah not giving their defence the opportunity to rebound with their accuracy.  Our passes were settled and strong. Third quarter is where we seem to lose our drive.  We started to play Upper FTG’s game.  Forcing long passes which saw many turnovers by the opposition.  An awesome goal just inside the ring by Casey at the end of the quarter kept us in front by a goal.  We held onto our lead and won by 3.  We are on track for finals! Well done Gold!

BROWN – Division 4
Round 11 Boronia Brown 29 defeated Nunawading Lions 10 – Special mention to Alex on her 54th game for Boronia!  This is an enormous achievement which shows your growth in the club and your loyalty.

What a great game by every player on the court!  We all got to the game early and ready for a pre-game training session with Bec for defensive throw ins.  Just 5 minutes practicing these throw ins made such a difference on our flow down the court.  Huge congratulations to Chelsea, Alex, Amanda and Courtney for your willingness to learn and take the coaching on board.  The result was so rewarding.

This week’s game again was very physical.  And again we were the best and fairest team on court.  Unfortunately Amanda went down with an ankle injury in the 3rd quarter and we wish her a speedy recovery.  Our attacking end received some valuable feedback from Bec during the game.  Lauren leading the whole way down the court was a definite highlight of the game as well as the attacking end putting together some killer combinations.  Caitlin has settled well into GA with Dani in GS. The combination of accuracy, height and rebounds we cannot fault!  Sherridan, Mollie and Bec brought control and accuracy of assists into the goal circle as well as movement down the court.  Everyone supported each other which got us the lead and brought home the win!

We are creeping into finals and this win has now moved us up a spot to third on the ladder! As we are looking strong for finals we will be trialling combinations and using that warm up type to really define and broaden our skills. Great game girls! Looking forward to hopefully another win next week!

Under 19’s Match Report: Round 12 Boronia v Scoresby

In cold, wet and slippery conditions, the 19s came up against a determined Scoresby outfit. The first quarter was a scrappy affair. We controlled the majority of the play but couldn’t make the most of the opportunities, kicking four wasteful behinds.  Jake Mellis was everywhere and had some good support through the likes of Harry, Will and Trent.  Scoresby managed to move the ball forward towards the end of the quarter and snuck in a goal to take the lead at quarter time.

The second continued to be ugly footy and it didn’t help that Jake was now being tagged by one of their best players.  Muells made the move into the ruck to reduce the influence of the opposition’s big unit in the middle, ensuring that the mids had a chance to have more affect on clearances.  Despite some sloppy defensive work, we managed to attack enough to get some majors.  Hard work from Bakes, Slats and Jacko up forward ensured the hard work up the ground was being rewarded.

The boys came out firing in the third and despite an early goal to Scoresby, we fought back to bang on a couple of our own.  Hoff and Fletch had moved into the midfield and the dynamics were starting to go in our favour.  To Scoresby’s credit, they held strong and played a disciplined wet weather game.  With the great work and run by Jimmy, Dos and Ryan on the wings, we moved the ball better and ensured the deficit at 3 quarter time was minimal.

We fired up after the final break and played a more disciplined game.  The game was certainly not a spectacle, but if you looked closely you would have seen some really hard and courageous efforts from players willing to put their body on the line, such as Lee, Nots, Milky and Johnny Mac, who played an outstanding final term.  Although behind for a short while, we bounced back and managed to pull off a grinding 4 point victory.  Whilst it is important to celebrate these wins, we need to ensure that we put our best foot forward against The Basin in our next clash.

U19’s Match Report: Round 11 Boronia v South Belgrave

The U19’s headed up the mountain for the early game to take on a competitive South Belgrave with Robbo taking the coaching reins and giving Fletch a well-deserved week off.  We also welcomed Luke Slater to the club for his first game.

Based on their results this year, South Belgrave had been competitive in every game and the boys knew that South needed to take a scalp to push their claims for a finals spot.  A fast start was stressed to the team pre game but unfortunately we conceded three goals, all from free kicks, and went into the ¼ time break down by 4 points.  Two goals to Josh Baker showed that if we moved the ball quickly on the small ground we would have plenty of opportunities to score.

The second quarter was a high scoring affair with both teams playing free flowing football which resulted in both teams kicking four goals apiece.  After a slow start, Trent Mellis & Harry Fewson started to get on top in the midfield, thanks to the tireless work of Ben Anderson & Jack Mueller in the ruck. Tuna & Luke Slater both kicked 2 for the quarter, with the latter being mobbed by his team mates after kicking his first goal for the club.  The half time score saw the Hawker ahead by a solitary point.

The coaches made some moves at half time in an effort to get the game going our way.  Jake Mellis was moved to CHB and Hoff was thrown into the midfield along with the big body of Will Morrison to try and assert some dominance around the stoppages.  South Belgrave managed to get on top in the first part of the third quarter through the dominance of their #12 on the wing so Bailey Campbell was sent to him with the simple task of following him everywhere and shutting him down.  Cambo did a great job, sacrificing his own game, and from this point on #12 only had 2 possessions and the game started to turn the Hawker’s way.  We clawed our way back from being down and led by 2 points at ¾ time.

The last quarter was a see-sawing affair with huge desperation being shown by both sides.  We managed to keep our noises in front for the entire quarter and maintained our composure in the final few minutes to control the game and at the final siren we were ahead by 4 points.  It was a huge team effort from everyone playing their role and digging deep, especially considering we were down two players going into the final quarter.  Bakes ended up with 3 goals for the game, Hoff was everywhere & Jake Mellis was a rock at CHB in the 2ndhalf.

After the game, Robbo happily handed the coaching gig back to Fletch with a perfect record intact and the young Hawks look forward to another tough challenge against Scoresby this week.

Netball Match Reports

BORONIA  HAWKS

Tonight was always going to be a tough game against top seated Fairpark Yellow, who came runners up to our Hawks premier team in the 2017 GF.  As usual Hawks started a little slow but settled into their groove 10 minutes into the game.  I think we surprised Fairpark by getting to within 3 goals and showing them some tough competition.  Fairpark were a team of 9 tonight and they are a very competitive and experienced team who have been playing together for years.  In the last quarter they blew out the scores to take the win by 20!  Hawks lost 40-60

Unfortunately with us only having 7 players and an hour long game, Hawks had no fresh legs to push through in the last quarter.  However I don’t think the scores reflected how good we played tonight.

Fill in Amy Hazard was a fantastic pick up for us in defence and played a great game with countless turn overs. Julia, Ann-Maree and Mel Hutton played hard and strong in goals together and Emily Barrie had a great game, working her arse off through the mid court.  Carla Alexander, Ally Victoria and Mandy Bell all had very good games but unfortunately we just couldn’t pull it together enough to keep the scores tighter.  I hope we get another chance to play Fairpark with our full team available, as I truly believe we could get close to them!!  Not a bad effort tonight  Go smash it next week against Mulgrave ladies!

BORONIA GOLD

This week we welcomed back Ti.  We came out strong leading the first 1/4 by a couple of goals and kept the lead into half time.  We had 9 players so with fresh legs in the third quarter we pushed the lead out to 6 goals. Defenders working hard with many rebounds and Stacey strong down the court in centre.  Goalers once again making great position in the ring.

With a change from us in the last quarter Whitehorse took the opportunity and managed to take the lead by 1 goal.  We weren’t going to let the win go without a fight and everyone stepped up to get back in front. We were able to hold on and take the win by one goal.

Div. 3: Boronia Gold 33 d Whitehorse Pioneers 31
Goals: Jess Hall, Sarah Grigg 13, Casey Hahn 4, Danielle Reynolds, Chanelle Barnard, Inge Baselier, Ti Parker, Janae Griffin, Stacey Shillingford.

BORONIA BROWN

After a rough start with 6 players, we ended the first quarter with 8!  Unfortunately we didn’t play the best game and were defeated.  Caitlin made her debut in GA which was great for height and rebounds, whilst our defence grows stronger with Alex and Courtney.  Great effort for the girls for sticking the game out and at the end of the day we still had a fun time!

Seniors Match Report: Boronia v South Belgrave

Winning Ugly – by “The Voice in the Outer”

There was a great atmosphere around the ground as all supporters were invested in each contest and each umpiring decision.  In what was an epic last quarter, the heart rate was high and the banter between both supporter groups was at fever pitch.  A great reminder why local footy is such a great game.

The rain had held off and the game started in dry cold conditions, with the ground in great nick.  From the first bounce we saw that SB had come to play.  After being smashed the week before by over 100 points, they targeted a couple of Hawker players off the ball and showed they would not take a backward step. The Hawker was up to the physical challenge but was wasteful in front of goal, kicking 3.6 to 3.1 to win a highly contested first quarter by 5 points.

The Hawker started the second in complete control kicking the first 3 goals.  We out played SB on their short ground and 15 minutes into the quarter we held a 4 goal lead.  SB made a couple of changes to their on-field setup which clogged up our forward line.  This tactic, the wet weather closing in, and the Hawker taking the foot off the pedal, left the door ajar for SB to kick a late goal and give them the incentive to crack in hard in the second half. The Hawker leading by 18 points at the long break.

The rain had set in for the afternoon as we started the third.  The lights were turned on and it looked more like dusk than the middle of the afternoon.  The Hawker was slow to adjust to the conditions and were second to the ball, with too much sloppy hand ball instead of playing wet weather footy.  SB showed us why they are a dangerous side on their own deck and if it was not for a couple undisciplined acts by SB individual players, the damage on the scoreboard would have been greater.  SB hit the lead kicking 5.2 to the Hawkers miserable 4 points to take a 10 point lead into the last quarter.  As the siren sounded for 3/4 time there was plenty of verbal between the two sides with SB echoing from their huddle “we’re coming for you”.  The challenge was put to the Hawker.

At the 3/4 time huddle there was no panic from the coaches: they made their moves and were in complete control.  For the players, they had been challenged both on the score board and shown how to play good, tough wet weather footy.  It was their turn to respond, put there head over the ball & win ugly.

The last quarter was played in wet slippery conditions.  It was a physical affair: hard tough contested footy; not many marks were taken by either side; with a huge amount of stoppages.  The backline held strong under extreme pressure and the midfield stepped up to even the contested ball at the stoppages.  Both sides were on the wrong end of free kicks & 15 meter penalties.  The Hawker kicked poorly and dropped a couple of tough marks inside 30 metres from goal, but ground out an ugly win kicking 1.6 to 1 point to take a 1 point victory over a side that played extremely well on the day.

Five things:
  • The last 1/4 was not pretty but a fantastic contest.
  • The LAKESHOW’S last quarter goal under extreme pressure. (Should have kicked 4),
  • The Hawker took up the challenged at 3/4 time to grind out the win. (Team Effort).
  • 17 behinds for the day needs to be addressed.
  • Are the bumps & big tackles being umpired out of local footy?

Development Squad Match Report – Boronia v South Belgrave

We finally got the weather that reminds us of how footy was played in the past, and our opposition were struggling each week to put a full team on the ground.  These are games where the under dog can be more desperate and surprise their opponents, and in the first 5 minutes that’s exactly what happened.

Today we were excited to have a long awaited look at Rhys Migues after 11 weeks on the injury list, also Tyler Dower at full forward was another selection that was well deserved.  With some of our regulars elevated to the senior squad, doors opened for a few positional changes.  Shagga in the middle for the second week with Smithy, Castersen and Wrighty in the ruck we would have what we presumed would be first touch of the ball, and they didn’t disappoint.

With Ruffy, Romano and Bruce giving us plenty of run off the half back line and the mids delivering to the forwards with much better disposals,  we looked more like the team of earlier in the season.  Our tackling was much better than in previous weeks and we forced plenty of turnovers.  We kept our forward line open with plenty of space for the two talls to work in, even on a small ground.  Perhaps the other forwards were a little to high, something to work on by the coaches.  Everyone was contributing and goals were coming from all forwards: Goldy, Migues, Stamma to name a few.

We held a commanding lead at the long break.  Any opponent will dig deep to gain respect after a spray from their coach and to South Belgrave’s credit they did just that.  The third quarter was not pretty and stoppages dominated this term. Still we kept the pressure on.  The final term was played on our terms and we scored more regulary and with better link up footy.  With an all round team effort this week and a large winning margin we now look forward to a huge match next week.
