Development Squad Match Report: Boronia v The Basin
Today we would mix the coaching up for something a bit different with Wrighty Senior in charge and after some great words before the game we were ready to go. The out come of todays game was always going to be determined by who one the hard ball at ground level, that’s the way they play footy. With Carro back from injury and Wrighty in great form we were always going to get first touch in the middle. We had practiced clearances and forward entry on Thursday and early it looked as if it would pay dividends.
The first term was played in two halves the clearances were fifty-fifty and they played off Carro’s knocks, with some good ball movement we looked to be on. In the last ten minutes of the term with Wright in the ruck we cleared four times to Dylan Dower and had the best forward entries we’d had in weeks. This allowed Patto and J Stama a good look at the footy.
The second term was even, pressure football played mostly between the back lines. We would clear from half back only to have the opposing back line bring it straight back. It was a good game to be a spectator. With some great contests across the ground the scales were evenly balanced at the long break.
The second half would see us play safe footy down the lines mostly and this is not the brand we want to play. We must take the game on and be braver with the ball – play as we train is what we want. Use the space and work hard to use our team mates who have run to open space. Granland was free all day and we used him only once. With only a kick in it at three quarter time we had a delay with an umpire down.
Going into the final term the game was going to won by the smarter team. The Basin wanted a battle fought through stoppage after stoppage and we played into their hands. It was an arm wrestle and we had our opportunities but we will learn and be brave with our footy from now on. We had some great contributors today. It was great to see Jake Whitmore having an impact, with all players doing their bit for the team. We only need to find another five to ten percent to win games like this.

U19’s Match Report: Boronia v The Basin
The early game saw a big clash between 3rd place Hawks and 4th place Bears. After scraping through with a couple of wins in the previous rounds, we were out to regain some confidence and pride. On the small deck, it was a congested and physical game from the onset. We managed to kick a quick goal to get the ball rolling thanks to a running wobbler from the boundary by the speedster, Ryan Williams. The Basin hit back with some positive ball movement forward, although our pressure ensured that they remained goalless come quarter time. With a late goal from Under 17s player, Mason Storr, we entered the break with a nine point lead.
The second half remained congested and the effective tackle count was already breaking records. It was coming down to the team who could remain disciplined and united the most. The Basin managed a couple of goals throughout the second quarter, but so did we. The late inclusion of Kyle Notley was not wasted as he managed to get onto to a handy one out the back of the contest and slot through a major. The other came from a free kick to another Under 17s player filling in, Nathan Hare. Harey was everywhere and did not look out of place for a second, tearing apart the opposition backline and midfield. The main break saw us up by 7 points. The boys were full of confidence at half time and were eager to ensure the game kept progressing in our favour.
We applied pressure from the start and did our best to nullify their key ball winners. As a result, The Basin found it increasingly difficult to get the ball forward and when they did, some brilliance from our backline stopped the majority of flow, particularly several contested marks to the in-form Lee Fletcher. A strong goal to Josh Baker and a cheeky goal to the half-back flanker, Bailey Campbell, helped us to maintain our 7 point lead at 3-quarter time.
Whilst the contest remained close on the scoreboard, we felt like we were controlling the game and needed to punish them on the scoreboard in the last quarter, otherwise all of the hard work would have been wasted. With a slight shuffle around to provide improved balance, we increased our ball control and our flair (insert massive plucks to Jacko Lech and Cooper Dunkinson from the 17s) whilst maintaining the huge tackle count. The Bears only managed the single goal in the final term, although we found majors through both Luke Slater and Josh Baker. A satisfying and fulfilling victory by 15 points over the local rival. We now shift our focus to the 2nd placed Heathmont, who are arguably the flag favourites at this point of the season. Go Hawks!

Seniors Match Report – Boronia v The Basin
A big day of footy awaited the 19’s, D Squad and Seniors as we played traditional rivals The Basin at Batterham Park. For the seniors this game was an opportunity to get back to playing team footy and putting a gap on the ladder between the top 3 and the rest of 3rd division.
The Hawker started the 1st quarter full of run. Our midfield ran hard both ways and continually drove the ball into our forward line. Josh Hannon kicked our first goal with a crisply timed drop punt from 45 meters on the run. Whitey, Luke Hannon and the skip were in everything; Robbo “Senior” was pivotal across half forward and our backline combined to rebound the opposition forward attacks. The quarter was soured by the serious injury to Jayden Collins who was thrown to the ground in a tackle and had to be taken to hospital for tests and observation. Dangerous sling tackles need to be taken out of our game. The Hawker should have kicked a couple more goals but finished 23 points in front of The Basin at quarter time: 4.5 29 to 1.0 6.
The Basin have not won a game this year against the top 4 sides and the Hawker coaching staff knew they would come out hard in the second and that’s what happened. The Basin’s hard running off their half backline and through the middle was a feature of their play. The Hawker worked hard but turned the ball over a number of times which gave The Basin the opportunity to put scoreboard pressure on The Hawks. The Basin’s ground can open you up or close you down if you cough up the ball to the opposition. The Basin played their home ground exactly this way to dominate the Hawker in parts of the quarter. If not for The Basin’s inaccuracy (3 goals 7 points to 1 goal 1 point) in front of goal the scoreboard could have been worse; with the Hawker taking a slender 5 point lead into the main break.
The third quarter was played in a close, tight and highly contested manner by both sides. Even though our backline was undersized against the taller opposition they continually transitioned the ball from defence to attack. Hammer was front and centre in scouting the ball off the deck, the twin towers across half forward (Robbo and Robbo) started to gel with Robbo Junior gaining confidence after a long layoff and kicked a big goal. Brayden Bowes started to influence the game and chipped in with 2 goals of his own to give the Hawker a 21 point lead going into three quarter time. Boronia 8.7 55 to The Basin 4.10 34.
There was a large Hawker crowd at the three-quarter time huddle. Clarky addresses his players in a controlled manner and makes a point of the team KPI’s. The next 30 minutes would need a team effort if we were to hold off The Basin who would be kicking to the scoring end to the roar of their fanatical supporters.
The fourth quarter was played similar to the third: a physical game with a lot of stoppages and a lot of tackles. The momentum changed when Josh Hannon delivered a big goal to kick his 3rd for the day and put a 25 point margin on the opposition. Even though The Basin had many opportunities to kick goals in the last 10 minutes of the quarter, the Hawker held firm against the 4th highest offensive side in the league (Boronia is 5th); the Hawker taking a well-deserved 18 point victory over our traditional rival.
Five Points:
- We wish a quick recovery to both Collo and the Reserves ump who went down at 3/4 time.
- The team effort was the catalyst to give us a victory to help set up the rest of our year.
- Midfield provided great support for our big forwards.
- Backline kept the opposition to only 1 goal in the second half.
- A crack down on dangerous sling tackles is needed.

HAWKS – Premier Division
Boronia Hawks v Wantirna South Devils Round 11 A little bit of pre-game stress as my team dropped to 6 players 1 hour before the game… Lucky for us, Kasey Lee was able to chuck on her dress and runners, drive all the way from Frankston and play an absolute ripper of a game for us! Thanks Kasey for coming to our rescue.
We knew tonight was going to be a tough game against 2nd seated Wantirna South Devils (we are currently sitting 4th). As usual our first quarter was our biggest loss: 5-13 (maybe we need to start warming up better ladies!!!!); but as usual we picked up our game and showed them we weren’t losing without a fight. In the 3rd quarter we got to within 3 goals but we just couldn’t keep up the fight and ended up losing 41-53.
Tonight’s score really doesn’t represent the quality of Netball we played. It really was a great game of Netball with lots of positive play. I’d say Wantirna beat us with their full court defence, defensive turnovers and their fitness tonight. Amy Hazard was a stand out for us in GD; Amy – you played a very classy and skilful game against some questionable play. You had countless turnovers, deflections and drive down the court. Awesome game tonight, super happy to have you playing with us! Mel Hutton proved her versatility and showed us she’s got the skills to step out of goals and run the Centre and, despite injury, Ally had a great 2nd half in WA. Both our goalers; Emily Barrie and Sharmini-Jane Philp had to work very hard for each and every goal scored tonight! I t took a little while for our goalers to settle into their groove against some tough defenders, but once our mid-courters started feeding into the front positions both girls started to score well. A pretty damn good effort against a very good team. Well done Hawks! Next week we play Wantirna South Reserves at Knox at 8pm.

GOLD – Division 3
Round 11 Boronia Gold v Upper Ferntree Gully The first half of our games are definitely or strongest. Our defence was tight with many turnovers by Inga and Ti, and plenty of options to pass down the court with mid court re-offering. As always Jess giving the wings easy passing into the ring, Jess and Sarah not giving their defence the opportunity to rebound with their accuracy. Our passes were settled and strong. Third quarter is where we seem to lose our drive. We started to play Upper FTG’s game. Forcing long passes which saw many turnovers by the opposition. An awesome goal just inside the ring by Casey at the end of the quarter kept us in front by a goal. We held onto our lead and won by 3. We are on track for finals! Well done Gold!

BROWN – Division 4
Round 11 Boronia Brown 29 defeated Nunawading Lions 10 – Special mention to Alex on her 54th game for Boronia! This is an enormous achievement which shows your growth in the club and your loyalty.
What a great game by every player on the court! We all got to the game early and ready for a pre-game training session with Bec for defensive throw ins. Just 5 minutes practicing these throw ins made such a difference on our flow down the court. Huge congratulations to Chelsea, Alex, Amanda and Courtney for your willingness to learn and take the coaching on board. The result was so rewarding.
This week’s game again was very physical. And again we were the best and fairest team on court. Unfortunately Amanda went down with an ankle injury in the 3rd quarter and we wish her a speedy recovery. Our attacking end received some valuable feedback from Bec during the game. Lauren leading the whole way down the court was a definite highlight of the game as well as the attacking end putting together some killer combinations. Caitlin has settled well into GA with Dani in GS. The combination of accuracy, height and rebounds we cannot fault! Sherridan, Mollie and Bec brought control and accuracy of assists into the goal circle as well as movement down the court. Everyone supported each other which got us the lead and brought home the win!
We are creeping into finals and this win has now moved us up a spot to third on the ladder! As we are looking strong for finals we will be trialling combinations and using that warm up type to really define and broaden our skills. Great game girls! Looking forward to hopefully another win next week!

One of the Boronia Hawks’ biggest functions is coming up, the 200 DRAW!
It’s a reverse raffle with 200 tickets sold. The first number pulled out is not announced and is locked away, then they draw out the rest of the 199 numbers before they reveal who was the first one drawn (the winner). The tension is incredible!
Also it’s $4,999 for the winner!
Tickets are $130 but that gets two people in, and it’s FREE beer, wine and $3 spirits through the night. Finger food is provided and there is LIVE MUSIC! Please see Michael Goldsack at the Club on Thursday nights to grab your tickets!
Under 19’s Match Report: Round 12 Boronia v Scoresby
In cold, wet and slippery conditions, the 19s came up against a determined Scoresby outfit. The first quarter was a scrappy affair. We controlled the majority of the play but couldn’t make the most of the opportunities, kicking four wasteful behinds. Jake Mellis was everywhere and had some good support through the likes of Harry, Will and Trent. Scoresby managed to move the ball forward towards the end of the quarter and snuck in a goal to take the lead at quarter time.
The second continued to be ugly footy and it didn’t help that Jake was now being tagged by one of their best players. Muells made the move into the ruck to reduce the influence of the opposition’s big unit in the middle, ensuring that the mids had a chance to have more affect on clearances. Despite some sloppy defensive work, we managed to attack enough to get some majors. Hard work from Bakes, Slats and Jacko up forward ensured the hard work up the ground was being rewarded.
The boys came out firing in the third and despite an early goal to Scoresby, we fought back to bang on a couple of our own. Hoff and Fletch had moved into the midfield and the dynamics were starting to go in our favour. To Scoresby’s credit, they held strong and played a disciplined wet weather game. With the great work and run by Jimmy, Dos and Ryan on the wings, we moved the ball better and ensured the deficit at 3 quarter time was minimal.
We fired up after the final break and played a more disciplined game. The game was certainly not a spectacle, but if you looked closely you would have seen some really hard and courageous efforts from players willing to put their body on the line, such as Lee, Nots, Milky and Johnny Mac, who played an outstanding final term. Although behind for a short while, we bounced back and managed to pull off a grinding 4 point victory. Whilst it is important to celebrate these wins, we need to ensure that we put our best foot forward against The Basin in our next clash.

A HUGE THANK YOU to VicHealth
Boronia Hawks are absolutely delighted to announce that the Club successfully applied for an Active Club Grant from Vic Health to assist in the launch of our Women’s Football Team in 2018.
The Active Club Grant has assisted the Club to start our team from scratch by advertising for players and then equipping the girls with jumpers, footballs, training tops and so on.
As you all know, our team is now competing in Division 2 of the Eastern Region Womens Football League, a competition that is absolutely booming with new teams. The Hawks have a core team of 26 girls, with only a couple having played footy before. Some well known Hawka families are represented in the team, emphasising how the team is already embraced as part of the Boronia football community.
Success is not always measured by the scoreboard, as the girls are loving their footy and the Club could not be prouder of their team spirit and determination to learn, play and develop. We are very lucky to have Ray Lacey and Scott Nicholas, two Hawks greats in their own right, providing their wealth of experience as Co-Coaches for our inaugural team.
The Active Club Grant was made available to support clubs to implement initiatives that will engage more women and girls in sport. Almost half as many women take part in organised sport compared to men, and women are most likely to stop playing sport as teenagers. There is more momentum in female sport than ever before, but Vic Health recognised the need to offer more opportunities for women and girls to get involved in sport at the community level.
Congratulations to Scott Nicholas for his successful grant application. Once again, many thanks to Vic Health for their support of the Boronia Hawks Women’s Football Program.
