Jake Lock

The Boronia Hawks community has been shocked and saddened to learn of the recent passing of Jakeb Lock. Jake was a great supporter our women’s football program as the partner of Jess Buzinskas.

Go Fund Me page: In loving memory of Jakeb Lock.

Jake Lock

Jake has looked after the players’ children as part of our Little Hawka’s childcare for several years and over that time became a much loved part of the team. How lucky we were to find someone who loved our kids as much as the mums did and who gave the mums an opportunity to train and play footy because their kids were so well taken care of.

The Club’s players and supporters all express our deep sorrow and sympathy to Jess and her family and to Jake’s many family and friends. We also ask you to please consider a contribution to the Go Fund Me page, established by Candyce Wright and Erin Stanios, to assist Jess.

Brock is back for 2023.

Boronia Hawks Football Netball Club is very proud to announce that CRAIG BROCKLEY will be coaching our Men’s Development Squad in 2023, his sixth year in this role.

Like Matt Clark, Brock has earned the absolute respect of all players and supporters in the club and we are very fortunate to have coaches of this calibre leading our teams. Please join us all in thanking Craig and congratulating him on his reappointment.

Miah’s Indigenous Designs

Miah from our Under 16 Girls team has discovered a passion for painting footy boots with traditional indigenous art.

Miah has been busy painting the boots of her team mates with meaningful symbols that relate to community, gathering and running on the field. She is currently perfecting her craft to ensure the longevity of her designs.

The Under 16 Girls had a bye today but celebrated NAIDOC Week last Sunday. Miah and her sister Zoe, who also plays in the Under 16’s team, wrote their thoughts on what NAIDOC Week means to them as young indigenous people.

“NAIDOC Week makes me feel inspired. It makes me feel more connected to my community and my people that I have in my life and grateful for everything I have.” – Zoe

“NAIDOC week means to me being able to connect to my community across Australia. Remember and recognise and commemorate all the achievements and history our first nations people have endured and created.” – Miah

We love your designs Miah and can’t wait to see more of what you create!

Keep Off the (Artificial) Grass!

Work is now underway at Tormore Reserve on the installation of artificial turf in front of the benches.

Thanks to Knox City Council for getting this done as part of the continual improvement of our Club facilities. Millers will also receive the same upgrade, with work expected to be completed this week – weather permitting!

Please keep off the works areas until work is completed. Thanks to Phil Watson for the photos!

Liam Shiels takes Under 14’s Training!

On Tuesday night our Under 14 Boys were surprised by Hawthorn triple Premiership player & this years’ Number 1 Ticket Holder, Liam Shiels!! Liam took the boys’ training session, answered questions and signed some autographs.

Many thanks to Liam who has always been willing to make time to support the Boronia Hawks juniors.

Fun Fact: Liam Shiels transferred to play with Boronia in Under 18’s but spent all year with Eastern Ranges before being selected by Hawthorn at pick 8 in the 2008 National Draft. We still hope to get him back one day for a kick with the Hawka!

Update on Development of New Clubrooms

What a moment it was when Alan Tudge MP, the federal Member for Aston, announced at our Presidents Lunch on 9 April the funding of $5M for the development and construction of a new pavilion at Tormore Reserve.

Alan followed up with this announcement on his Facebook page.

$5 MILLION FOR A NEW PAVILION AT TORMORE RESERVE, BORONIA ?

For over ten years, the leaders of Boronia Hawks Football Netball Club and Boronia Cricket Club have been pressing for an upgraded pavilion to replace the 40 year old club rooms. Today, I announced $5 million of federal funds to make this happen. Congratulations to all of those who persisted to make this happen. It will be a great result for the entire Boronia community.

Now What?

The Club is now working hard to move quickly from the announcement towards a framework that will deliver the fulfilment of our needs as a modern, inclusive community club with strong growth, particularly in female participation. We are working closely with our co-tenants from Boronia Cricket Club, who are an essential partner for all development of facilities at Tormore Reserve.

We are now proud to announce the formation of the Steering Committee that will be pivotal to the success of the development project. The committee will be chaired by Wayne Preston, who has already played a huge role in getting us to this point. This is a strong group of volunteers with the skills and knowledge necessary for such a task and who are all passionate and committed to their clubs and community.

  • Wayne Preston – Senior Vice President, BHFNC;
  • Scott Nicholas – Chair, Board of Directors, BHFNC;
  • Karen Little – Women’s Football Operations Manager, BHFNC;
  • David Murrihy – former Club Secretary and Life Member, BHFNC;
  • Paul Noone – President, BCC;
  • Matt Smythe – Vice-President, BCC;
  • Leigh Blennerhasset – Secretary, BCC;
  • Melanie Kogelman – Treasurer, BCC.

All members and supporters of our club are welcome to read the overview of the Steering Committee’s role and responsibilities, which has been shared with, and welcomed by, our community representatives Alan Tudge MP, Jackson Taylor MP and Cr Yvonne Allred.

We look forward to providing regular updates as we move forward with this very exciting initiative for the sporting community of Boronia.
