EFL Club Development Day

Many thanks to our Club members who who attended last Sunday’s EFL Development Day at Deakin University.  In particular, we would like to express our thanks, and admiration, to our very own Elle Dow, the AFL Victoria Development Manager for Eastern Region, who organised the event.

Karen Little, our Director of Community & Inclusion  was very impressed with the day.  Here are some of her thoughts. “The EFL Club Development morning was a great opportunity to network and learn. With three parallel sessions there were a diverse range of speakers and topics including finance, conflict resolution, applying for grants and how to manage Team App. For me, the highlight of the day was a presentation by Jackson Taylor from AFL Victoria on engaging diversity in our community. Goy Lok spoke about the barriers and challenges of joining a local footy club after arriving in Australia as a refugee and his successes to date. A reminder that a football club is so much more than the game of football. Congratulations to Elle Dow and team for organising such a great program”.

It was a great sign for Boronia Hawks that four of our women’s footballers attended this afternoon’s EFL Female Development Day, also organised by Elle.  Here are Candyce Wright’s thoughts on the success of the day. “This afternoon showed me the importance of having powerful and inspiring women as a part of a sporting community!  It doesn’t matter your background or skill; it’s the heart and soft touches that we bring to the Club that will encourage people from different cultures, diversity and limitations to come and feel the support we all feel, on and off the field”.  Terrific words Candyce!  Thank you to Elle, Candyce, Karen, Dee and Kat for attending today.

Welcome to Elle Dow!

Boronia Hawks is very happy to welcome Elle Dow to our Club and our Women’s Footy Team for 2019. Elle is a very experienced footballer who will play with the Hawks on a fill in / part-time basis in 2019.

Elle’s association with the Hawks goes back to when she helped run our inaugural girls footy clinic a couple of years ago.  She was recently appointed as AFL Victoria’s Football Development Manager for the Eastern Metropolitan Region and has previously worked on the development of women’s and girls footy in our region.  Elle has been been a great supporter of our women’s team and swung right behind us in those difficult early rounds of last season.

We really look forward to Elle meeting you all and becoming a part of our elite team!

A HUGE THANK YOU to VicHealth

Boronia Hawks are absolutely delighted to announce that the Club successfully applied for an Active Club Grant from Vic Health to assist in the launch of our Women’s Football Team in 2018.

The Active Club Grant has assisted the Club to start our team from scratch by advertising for players and then equipping the girls with jumpers, footballs, training tops and so on.

As you all know, our team is now competing in Division 2 of the Eastern Region Womens Football League, a competition that is absolutely booming with new teams. The Hawks have a core team of 26 girls, with only a couple having played footy before. Some well known Hawka families are represented in the team, emphasising how the team is already embraced as part of the Boronia football community.

Success is not always measured by the scoreboard, as the girls are loving their footy and the Club could not be prouder of their team spirit and determination to learn, play and develop. We are very lucky to have Ray Lacey and Scott Nicholas, two Hawks greats in their own right, providing their wealth of experience as Co-Coaches for our inaugural team.

The Active Club Grant was made available to support clubs to implement initiatives that will engage more women and girls in sport. Almost half as many women take part in organised sport compared to men, and women are most likely to stop playing sport as teenagers. There is more momentum in female sport than ever before, but Vic Health recognised the need to offer more opportunities for women and girls to get involved in sport at the community level.

Congratulations to Scott Nicholas for his successful grant application. Once again, many thanks to Vic Health for their support of the Boronia Hawks Women’s Football Program.
