Work has now started on the new lights at Tormore Reserve.
We will have four new 28m poles, each one carrying 6 lights. For the sparkies, they are 6 Philips Optivision BVP525 LED Luminaires. They will be a significant improvement for training sessions and will enable us to conduct twilight and night matches.
Many thanks to Alan Tudge MP for his support in funding this tremendous addition to the facilities at Tormore Reserve.
Thanks to Knox City Council for their support with design and construction.
Finally, thanks our Grants Co-ordinator Kerryn Westcott for successfully managing the submission process resulting in our winning the grant; and to our Project Manager, that amazing man of many talents, Kristan Wood!

Boronia Hawks are very pleased let all our supporters know that Samantha Dunkinson has been nominated for the AFL’s AUSKICK VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD. #auskickvoty #boroniahawks
Sam is our Junior Vice-President and took on the role of Boronia Auskick Co-ordinator at the start of this year. Boronia Auskick has gone from strength to strength under her guidance, with 105 registered players getting out for a kick on Friday nights at Tormore Reserve.
Sam has got it all running smoothly, reflecting her training as a teacher. Parents are getting involved in running the groups and we have senior players from both our men’s and women’s teams actively involved in helping the kids to develop their skills.
Sam has brought an enormous passion and commitment to Boronia Auskick, resulting in some great initiatives. She has brought sponsors Boronia McDonalds and Lipari Pizza on board to assist with funding of new equipment including footballs and water bottles. Sam has also introduced a Sensory Space to assist the kids who might get a little overwhelmed by everything and just need a quiet spot for a while.
Sam’s contribution to the Boronia Auskick has seen a real boost to our junior numbers with many Auskickers also choosing to play junior footy with Boronia Hawks. Our two new Under 8’s teams are a direct result of the boost to our Auskick program over the past two years.
Well done Sam! We congratulate you on your well deserved nomination and wish you well when the awards are announced. You are already a winner in our eyes!
We welcomed Shane (facilitator) and Cindy (welfare champion) from OTLR to the Club and they were very impressed to see such a great attendance. Cindy commented the she normally gets around all the tables but that it just wasn’t possible last night due to the size of the group.
Congratulations to one of our players who spoke openly to the group last night to share his journey with mental welfare. This willingness to talk about the issues triggered a lot of really beneficial conversations throughout the room. It so often helps to talk to others.
Many thanks to Wayne Preston for his work in arranging the session. We can really look forward to a second session in around six weeks that will cover “Culture and Leadership.

Boronia Hawks champion, Jess Bolton, announced his retirement to coaches, players and supporters at Tormore Reserve last night. Jess will play his final game for the Club on Saturday 1 June at Tormore Reserve against Mulgrave.
As many will know, Jess is part of a very successful real estate agency with his cousin and former Hawk, Dan Bolton at Fletchers Mooroolbark. The increasing demands of his work have seen Jess miss a few games already this season. In typically selfless fashion, Jess said that he didn’t want to be taking a spot from one of our young players who are well and truly ready for senior football.
Dan and Jess Bolton lay a tackle in Jess’ senior debut for Boronia in Round 1 2009.
Senior Coach Matt Clark paid tribute to Jess as an outstanding person, footballer and contributor to the Club over many years, highlighting that opposition coaches would always need to plan for Bolts as a key player for the Hawks.
Jess is a true champion of the Club and two-time Bob Henry Medallist.
He was originally a Boronia Junior but left for East Burwood to play 74 games between 2005 and 2007 including 20 games in Division 1 Seniors. Bolts came back to Boronia in 2009 to make his senior debut for the Hawka. He also played 19 VFL games for Casey Scorpions / Demons between 2009 and 2012 before committing 100% to Boronia in 2013.
Jess is one of our most decorated players of any era in the Club’s history. His record includes:
Boronia U15’s B&F in 2003;
Bob Henry Medallist for Senior Best & Fairest in 2012 and 2014;
2013 and 2017 Senior Runners Up B&F;
Senior Captain in 2014;
2016 Seniors Best Team Player;
100th Game Medal in 2015;
EFL Division 3 Team of the Year in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 & 2017;
Under 19’s Assistant Coach 2016-17;
150th Game Trophy in 2018.
Senior Premiership player in 2018.
Please join us all is congratulating Jess on his fantastic career with Boronia Hawks Football Netball Club.
Boronia Hawks Football Netball Club is very conscious of our role as an important community hub, with a large number of players, members, families and friends. The diversity of any community group invariably means that mental health is something that touches us all in some way.
The AFL has recently announced that it will be creating a new role of head of mental health to oversee the rising number of elite footballers experiencing difficulty with anxiety, stress and depression and to promote a greater awareness of wellbeing amongst the Clubs. This article from The Guardian Australia provides an insight to the nature of this issue in AFL ranks. Click here. Alternately, you can click here to read the about the AFL’s approach to Mental Health.
Love Me Love You – our focus of support for this weekend
Boronia Hawks will contribute to the conversation about Mental Health Awareness within the Club by supporting “Love Me Love You“, a non-profit charity designed to help young people navigate the challenges of mental health. This organisation was founded by former Hawthorn player Lance Picioane, as a result of his own struggles during and after his football career.
Lance Picioane, founder of “Love Me Love You
This year alone the group has presented to 4000 young people through schools, football clubs and professional organisations. Picioane’s team include people with first hand experience on drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and depression.
The Club has chosen to support this particular cause because of the enormous support provided by “Love Me Love You” to one of our own at a time of tragic loss.
As a result, we ask you all to take the time to think about Mental Health Awareness over the weekend of the 10th to 12th of May. The AFL is recognising the issue with the Beyond Blue Round, and Boronia Hawks has also registered to support that cause, along with the Fight Motor Neurone Disease round in early June.
“Love Me Love You Cup” Match this Saturday Night
Boronia Hawks Senior Women’s Team will play Ferntree Gully this coming Saturday night at 6:00pm for the “Love Me Love You” Cup. Both Clubs have been touched by tragedy in recent years and we come together now, and in the future, to help young people to know that they are never alone.
Our senior teams will be wearing the light blue arm bands as a demonstration of the Club’s commitment to creating awareness of mental health problems in our community.
We will also welcome your gold coin donations to the cause at our home games over the next few weeks.
If you have any questions or suggestions on how Boronia Hawks is approaching the awareness of Mental Health, please speak to Karen Little ( our Director of Community & Inclusion) or Scott Nicholas (Chairman, Boronia Hawks FNC).
